10:53 AM ET 09.29 | Russian ice hockey player Alexander Ovechkin, who will become the second torchbearer for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics on Sunday, refused to comment on Russia's controversial anti-gay law that threatens to disrupt preparations for February's Games. "I am just a hockey player. This is something for the politicians," Ovechkin said when asked by Reuters whether the law was an obstacle as Russia prepares to host its first winter Olympics. Critics say the law which bars the spread of information concerning homosexuality among minors, in effect curtails all gay rights rallies and could be used to prosecute anyone voicing support for homosexuals. Supporters say it will help protect children.

The media sure is obsessed with all things gay. Closet issues?

the 2008 summer olympics were in Beijing and there was hardly a word about any of the human rights issues in China. And the Russian government's treatment of political opposition is brutal as it was 70 years ago. But, again, barely a mention.

The media was all over Tim Thomas for expressing his views because they did not coincide with theirs. And now the be-astards are going to be all over Ovechkin for NOT expressing them? The only thing these "journalists" are interested is for someone to publicly re-enforce their own personal beliefs. I don't give a damn what anybody does in the privacy of their own lives and bedrooms, I don't need to read about it in the papers.

He's not ready to come out quite yet.

Agreed, but on the subject of T.T, there is no denying his talents on the ice, but he opens his mouth to reporters and the worst possible thing for crap.......FACEBOOK! Or DRAMABOOK as I call it.

T.T brought a lot on himself is my point...

I think Ovie is smart to not go off the fence.

I agree but, they won't leave him alone now till he does.

Why does it matter at all what he thinks about it?

It doesn't but, the rabid media think it does.

LOL. But, this whole thing about asking a hockey player about political issues is stupid beyond belief. What's his opinion about Putin's support of Assad in Syria? Does he think they'll be able to get all the poison gas weapons out of Syria? What about the gas lines from Russia to Eastern Europe? Enough? Wll Putin use them to blackmail other countries? What does he think about a carbon tax? So many questions, so many stupid reporters.
