Falcons to make massive cuts

The Falcons' roster will undergo a radical change -- and those moves could come as soon as Friday. Several veterans will be cut and there could be some surprises, according to interviews with NFL officials and player agents by the Journal-Constitution. The radical changes will come at nearly every position. Among the veterans who could be released is strong safety Lawyer Milloy, said one NFL official. Such a move would strip the Falcons of their most respected leader and leave the team without either of last season's starting safeties. Free safety Chris Crocker's contract is expiring, and the Falcons don't plan to re-sign him. The offense could be in for a complete makeover as offensive linemen Wayne Gandy, Kynan Forney and Todd Weiner, wide receivers Joe Horn and Brian Finneran, tailback Warrick Dunn and quarterbacks Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich all have had their futures debated. Five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Keith Brooking could be among those released to the defense.

Hopefully the owner is on the cut list.

A weak Free Agent pool just got a lot better..A lot of these guys are going to show up next year and do very well..Not sure the Falcons are doing the right thing here, unless they are saying they assembled a bunch of football trash this last year..Think they just set themselves back for at least three years..With the number one pick in the draft in 2009, the Falcons take......

If you are a Falcon player wouldn't you want to be on the cut list?

February 15, 2008  07:59 AM ET

Wayne Gandy? Isn't he like 50 years old? Most of the guys on this list are past their prime and a salary cap burden. I have never been an ATL fan, but it looks like they need an infusion of young blood

February 15, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Great time for them to start over. Don't want any bad blood hanging around.

February 15, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Wow, did that team collapse without Vick around...

With the number one pick in 2009 the Atlanta Falcons select RB/WR M. Vick out of Leavenworth Federal

Warrick Dunn to the Colts. Bet on it.

Good idea to clean out the malcontents and over the hill players. In addition to some free agents and rookies, look at the best players in the CFL and Arena leagues for role players to fill the roster. Some good players have come from these places such as Warner, Garcia etc.

I am looking forward to seeing the list, it would really be funny (to me) to see Joe Horn on the list. I live in Atlanta now for family and business reasons (my heart is still in CA), but J Horn has been with the Falcons for one year and he has gottenon my nerves trying to defend M. Vick. He wasn't even in Atlanta when this went down, but comes across as a know it all. I could be wrong, but he needs to go.

With Miami and now Atlanta cutting their rosters the flooding should drive the price tags of these aging veterans in the free market. I'm hoping the Steelers can pick up at least one OL out of this pool if nothing else to add a little depth to a sorry line.

February 15, 2008  10:20 AM ET

They should just fold the whole team and drop it entirely from the NFL. Then some other NEW owner should pick up the opening in another city in Georgia so the people have to suffer because of the stupidity and ineptness of the Falcon organization as a whole.

February 15, 2008  10:20 AM ET

I hope the RAIDERS can sign the OL that is leaving the Steelers (Flacena???)

February 15, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Ops...so the people DON'T have to suffer....

February 15, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Somebody feel free to correct me on the name of the OL leaving the Steelers this year.

Brooking is one of my favorite players...ever since Ga Tech. He has been good for the Falcons and will be good for another team if they cut him.

most of the players on the list i can see being cut or taking a cut. but why would the falcons cut brooking? thats just crazy talk.
