07:23 AM ET 10.01 | Even if Theo Epstein says he doesn't feel any pressure to bring in a big name, Joe Girardi might help sell some tickets. [Girardi] was an upper-management favorite for the job when then-general manager Jim Hendry hired Lou Piniella seven years ago, and he is said to have coveted the job for a long time. Those close to Girardi say he and his family have a keen interest in returning to their Chicago roots and that it wouldn't take winning a bidding war to persuade him to leave the Yankees. Industry sources say the Cubs and Girardi have communicated mutual interest through back channels in recent weeks. ... The Washington Nationals also have begun to pursue him, sources say. Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and business president Crane Kenney are said to have pushed strongly for Girardi.

Good for him; he deserves a change to a team with a future.

whats the deal with giradi anyway? He doesnt strike me as a great manager-type. his teams have done well, but a blind monkey with no hands that drools all over himself can get 80 wins on a yankee team where the owners throw money around like its candy..

Joe did go to Northwestern in Evanston (just N of Chicago on the lake)...I actually worked there the same time he was a student.

I think if he wanted to go to a second-rate ball club, he'd opt for one with more historical significance, like the Cubs.

I'm suspecting the Yanks aren't going to be much better for a while given their aging and expensive roster and the Steinbrothers' mandate that they have to get the luxury tax reset in '14. Might actually be more hope in Chicago...well, maybe.

They have fluffers at Northwestern?

Yeah, they took care of me good.

It doesn't matter if the Cubs don't get Girardi because Cub fans are use to losing and they will still come to games.

Thanks, Ingrid. My latent intent was to inform StupidMoron that the Rangers were a second-rate ball club.

Yes...that was very clever!

At first I thought the story to the upper right said Garrett Morris was calling out Jason Claiborne.
"OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT!!!!..."

Joe could just soak up the sun in the bleachers and head to The Ginger Man in the 7th inning and nobody would care!
