Leafs' Carlyle courting controversy

07:33 AM ET 10.02 | One down, 81 to go -- and in Toronto, the goaltending competition is underway. One former Duck smiled when he heard Randy Carlyle planned to give James Reimer and Jonathan Bernier one game each in Toronto's back-to-back that opens the season. Apparently, that is a basic move in Carlyle's playbook. "He is starting the competition right away. He will make his goaltending decisions with only one interest in mind: who he thinks gives him the best chance to win." ... Carlyle does, however, like playing more than one guy. Only once in his coaching career has a goalie played 60 games -- Jean-Sebastien Giguere in Carlyle's first Anaheim season. Also, there would be occasions where the starter would not find out until the morning of the game.

So how often to they start the same goalie in back-to-back games anyway? This seems to be a standard practice throughout the league.

Nice to see the 8 Million Dollar man is on pace for his 80 point season.

Also on pace to be -162.

That's more than alright if the Leafs maintain an 82-win pace like you're suggesting.

I knew it was coming. You're welcome. :-)

Competition is good. I hope the NHL never resorts to pulling straws or consulting psychics to determine who should start the game.

So bitter. If it makes you feel better the Leafs haven't lost a season opener in regulation in like 7 years and 6 of those years were terrible, so..

As Cherry said 4 games in six days and two back to back games, scheduler could have done better.
