07:21 AM ET 10.03 | Texas announced Wednesday that David Ash will miss another game, this one a Thursday affair at Iowa State. Case McCoy, as he's done in in the other games in which Ash has been sidelined, will get the start. The big question is if this will be the game in which freshman Tyrone Swoopes will make his collegiate debut. Swoopes showed flashes in the spring after enrolling at Texas at mid-term, especially in the Orange-White game to conclude spring drills. But he sustained a hamstring injury that has slowed his progress, although he reportedly has recovered from it. Coach Mack Brown said Monday that the determining factor for playing the 6-foot, 4-inch, 245-pound Swoopes, is relatively simple. "You've got to see how the game's going," he said. "If you're not moving (the ball), you put him in."

Injuries to Ash may be more severe than advertised and he may not see much action the rest of the year. It makes sense to get Swopes some experience.

Best of luck from all of your District 7-2A fans, Swoopes!

Mack should get him some PT. He doesn't want his first action to come in the RRS in that crazy atmosphere. Oh wait, sure throw him to the wolves. lol

I'd rather not burn the redshirt

That's a strong consideration this far into the season. Who would back up McCoy while Ash is out?

I think Overstreet would be just as competent as Swoopes this year. That extra year as a QB to adjust to the college game is just too important.

Swoopes has WAY more talent, but just too young and raw. A lot of comparisons to VY.

I've said before on here, I can't recall the last true FR that played at an all conference level anywhere in country.

That's what I think, need to give the kid the most elig you can for the next coach to work with.

and that's what you have with Ash or McCoy?

Maybe you could get Ryan Swopes to transfer....then you could have "Swoopes to Swopes"

Ash is a very good QB. Case is a very bad QB.

Ash is very capable of being all conference. Only one that may be better is Petty.

All conference? No, but Peyton Manning was tossed behind center as a true freshman due to the seasoned starter's injury, and he did well through the end of that season.

See how the headline sucks you in? I thought Sheryl Swoopes was going to replace Mack...

So, if Mack burns Swopes' redshirt, puts him in, and he fails to win the game, is Mack just putting nails in his own coffin?

I think Mack's coffin at UT is already nailed shut.

Earl has spoken. Case closed. Jerry Gray era begins in 2014.

Johnny "Sheep Molester" Football was a red shirt? I could have sworn I heard some announcers refer to him as a true freshman. But a lot of them are pretty dumb.
