Aging defense crippling Steelers

07:16 AM ET 10.04 | The time has come -- and it's unwelcome. The Steelers' defense isn't what it used to be. It isn't what Troy Polamalu knows it to be. It isn't like any other Dick LeBeau has put on the field. It isn't like any Steelers defense since Chuck Noll was coaching. For all of the Steelers' problems on offense -- and they are many -- nothing explains their 0-4 start like the falloff of a defense that was easily the NFL's best statistically over the previous five seasons. "I think we all have to reassess ourselves," Polamalu said. "Everybody is very disappointed." Eight starters remain from 2008, when the Steelers' defense was one of the best of all time despite taking on the roughest schedule of any Super Bowl winner. ... "I'm not sure they can fix this," said former Colts and Bucs coach Tony Dungy.

I'm not sure what the Steelers are waiting for or probably afraid of. Age, injuries, and cap space should have been good reasons to cut, trade or let them test the FA market before the season started. Ravens did it with their most iconic players (Lewis and Reed).

They could have made the article this short.

Who would have thought the Browns will be 3-0 after trading their best offensive player.

Funny thing is, everyone on this site saw this coming last year. Even the Steelers fans were aware that there were problems. Some times I think GMs should listen more to their fan base.

Read this one the other day:

"I was trying to DVR The Biggest Loser and it keeps recording Steelers games."

Had to happen eventually with an aging team.

Their very old DC probably kept telling everyone he could get 'one more year' out of these guys and that bringing in new players would limit what he could do with his very complicated defense.
