Redskins believe they have best NT in league

09:39 PM ET 10.04 | The Washington Redskins defense has been one of the worst units in the NFL throughout the first month of the season, but that hasn't stopped the team's defensive coordinator Jim Haslett from praising his players - hey, optimism is a good thing. When Haslett was recently discussing his defense, the name Barry Cofield came up and Haslett was so proud of his player that he went on to call Cofield the best nose tackle in the league. The comment may be laughable considering the way the Redskins defense has performed recently, but the praise for Cofield is coming off of the heels of a two-sack performance in Week 4. Granted, the performance came against the Oakland Raiders and quarterback Matt Flynn, but Haslett was impressed with his nose tackle's play.

Wait, are we still supposed to be offended at the name "Redskins"? Has that been resolved?

I think Barry Cofield is a decent NT but the best in the league, NO! Keep dreaming Washington

I think it's great that Haslett is so concerned about his players self esteem.

Considering how poor a job he's doing as DC, it's the least he could do.

I wouldn't call Barry Cofield the best NT in the league. But I would consider him grossly underrated.

The man is stout against the run and brings a consistent pass rush up the middle. He's excelled in both a 4-3 (in New York) and a 3-4 (Washington) base defense.

His name got lost in New York while playing next to Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck. But Cofield played a role in that upset of the 18-1 Patriots.

Cofield good, Haslett, not so much.

They also believed they had a franchise QB for another 12-15 years, until they wheeled him out for a playoff game with a wonky knee.

Good post. He was a cap casualty. Can't keep everybody, especially after a superbowl win. The Redskins were the high bidder.

"Haslett was impressed with his nose tackle's play."

I guess he found a silver lining in an otherwise dark, dark cloud. Reminds me of the kid looking for a pony under pile of manure because, with so much ****, there's gotta be a pony in there somewhere.
