09:38 AM ET 10.05 | A question at Nick Saban's news conference about Alabama left tackle Cyrus Kouandjio turned into a critique of the media's analysis of NFL draft prospects. The Crimson Tide left tackle is considered one of top players at his position, but has been criticized at times early in the season. Saban said Kouandjio has "played very well overall." "I think a lot of expectations are created with these guys," Saban said. "I hate it that Mel Kiper and all these guys say this is the No. 1 guy at his position. They don't even have an idea."

Says the guy who can't coach at the NFL level...

Nick, you once said that Rolando McClain was the best player that you ever coached...

October 5, 2013  09:55 AM ET

He's right. They keep selecting Bama running backs in the first round.

October 5, 2013  09:59 AM ET

Saban is right.

LMFAO, great comment!!!!

Saban is right.

Maybe, but does Saban look at film of "all players from other college football teams" like Mel Kiper and all these so called NFL draft experts do?? I'm thinking Saban doesn't have a clue on what player the NFL considers to be the first player to be taken in the 2014 NFL draft.

October 5, 2013  10:26 AM ET

"And most of the teams haven't even evaluated them yet when they're underclassmen," Saban said. "But what it does create is this expectation that this guy is the best left tackle that ever played the game. So every time he gets beat, well, he isn't playing very well."

Saban is right. Kiper, ESPN, Fox talking heads say something and the lemmings believe it.

I doubt if Saban cares about who is the best player in college. However I'll wager that Saban is extremely familiar with players his team will face. He's seen way more film on them than Kiper or any of the talking heads at ESPN, CBS, Fox.

October 5, 2013  10:29 AM ET

Saban is just trying to deflect the pay for play scandal surrounding the Alabama program.

October 5, 2013  10:41 AM ET

Said the man who chose Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees.

That's probably true. Saban does look at quite a bit of film on teams that are on his schedule, but beyond that, I don't think he knows nor cares about who the NFL considers the best player is in the 2014 draft, unless that player is on his roster.

October 5, 2013  10:45 AM ET

Saban is proving to best the best college HC of his generation, and knows college talent.

But his track record for evaluating talent for the pros leaves a lot to be desired. Letting Drew Brees go to the Saints and signing Daunte Culpepper instead is proof enough.

Somebody should do a follow-up on Kiper's ratings to see how they match up with outcomes. I'm betting his toutings are full of more hot air than his Elvis bouffant.

Yeah, I bet you and I coud do just as good of a job evaluating collegs players talent as Kiper does. The only problem is we wouldn't make as much money as Mel does. :-)

As someone said earlier, Saban was the one that said R McClain was the best he had ever seen and now he isn't even playing ball....so I would say that Saban might know CFB players (and that peculiar skill set), but not so much on NFL (and that skill set.

And folks who say that a top lineman isn't playing well just because he gets beat a time or two isn't a very good football fan....everyone gets beat a every once in a while

Oh yeah, hell I remember that Walter Jones, as great of a player he was, he got beat several.

+1,000 and I'll take it bit further ...

... folks bagging on 18-20 year old college kids because they don't meet media-created expectations need to get a life. I question whether they're true fans of their team or the game of college football.
