Lawyer: Bush may pardon Clemens

When Roger Clemens mentioned in his testimony before Congress on Wednesday that a former President had tracked him down in a duck blind to wish him well before this week's congressional hearing on the Mitchell Report, the stage was set for questions about the influence of the White House on any possible prosecution of Clemens. The former President was George H.W. Bush, the father of the current President and a longtime Clemens friend. A lawyer for Brian McNamee, Clemens' chief accuser, told the Daily News on Thursday he wouldn't be surprised to see President Bush intervene in any criminal investigation of Clemens, possibly by issuing a preemptive pardon.

He should be allowed to pardon Clemens - IF that is what is needed.

It is called MENTAL ILLNESS....plain and simple.

C'mon now....NOBODY really cares what Clemens does with his own body. People basically just do not like to be lied to and Clemens' bad-side...."the bully" was not going to allow - the truth to be told.

Clemens is going to have to live the rest of his life with this "cloud" over his head and it will never go away.

He has disgraced his family and the entire idea that he was raised properly.

It is all a MISunderstanding.

Pardon him....we all know that he is NOW AN IDIOT.

Let's pardon, Bonds, Tejada, Palmerio, McGwire, etc....the list goes on and on!

Don't forget Marion Jones, T. Montgomery, Ben Johnson (oops he's Canadian....lol)

Last but not least pardon Mr. Conte as well and all of BALCO enterprise!

February 15, 2008  05:39 AM ET

While we're at it, he might as well pardon Enron too...

February 15, 2008  05:56 AM ET

I'm not really interested in punishing a liar. Clemens was not in the business of buying and selling PED's directly for profit. Although originally, as a fan, I gave him the benefit of the doubt, when he asked for it, but over time the evidence surely mounted against him as a user. At this point is there any player in jail for using? Rafael, Marrk, Chuck, Andy, Sammy, Jose, Migel, etc. No. Are there any other players who used and not named? Yes. On past championship teams? Wouldn't surprise me. Go for it Mr. President.

I personally dont care anymore. I'm angry about Congress spending time on this.

Except for the fact that both political parties need $$$,... This is one of those things that is really tough to justify. And in this case, where does it end? Bonds? And a bigger stretch is Vick. But look at Vick's parents and family.

And there are new drugs everyday. Everyday.

And Bin Laden is still waiting for forgiveness. And he is just a wacko religious figure.

Don't pardon anyone. Waterboard the entire Patriot organization. Oh... those films were destroyed, too. Darn.

Take away trophies then legalize all performance enhancing drugs for the future but they have to pay their own medical bills. Also, you cheat, you lose bling.

Wow Bush making yet another stupid decision... I'm not at all surprised

February 15, 2008  07:37 AM ET

Again, Clemens made millions upon millions of dollarss because of his illegal useage of PEDS. Tthat is fraud. And, he also helped through his actions to abet before and after the fact at least one other person's usage of PEDs. He has lied before he peolpe of America, we the fans, and now Congreess. He should be given as much lienency as Marion Jones was given, no more and no less. Any player who has lied about their usage of PEDs that has directly resulted in continuing their career or forwarding their career has perpetraed fraud that resulted in their receiving millions of dollars in profit from salaries and endorsements. They should count their lucky star s that they probably will only get hit with perjury charges and not a litany of obstruction, fraud, aidingg and abetting a criminal activity resulting in a felony, etc..... If after this our dimwitted president decides to pardon Mr.Clemens either before or after the fact here is nothing we can do about it. This is a procedure that has been practiced by past presidents for a very long time now and whether you agree with or don't it is and wil continue to be done, (personally I think it is a presidental power that is grreaty abused.)
I just want to add, though I am in the camp that thinks and believes Clemens did PEds illegally I want to ask just one quesion: If he is inncoent why are there so many lies and variations and inconsistencies in his story. IS that the way of an honest man?

February 15, 2008  07:47 AM ET

This is just a scapegoat to keep the real issues out of the media. Where is the committee for the Iraq war, the econmoy, and any other topic capital hill should be talking about besides this.

Who cares about doping in pro sports, they are for entertainment and people like to pay to see something extraordinary. If they choose to abuse their bodies..... well go for it.

February 15, 2008  07:50 AM ET

Grossedout9.. why should Barry Bonds be the center of it? The same thing that is being alleged Bonds is being alleged of Clemens. The exact same thing. And a reasonable person could argue that we actually have more evidence on Clemens.. so why should we ignore him and center on Bonds?

February 15, 2008  07:53 AM ET

4192 - Do you have some physical evidence??? Did you see Roger taking PEDS???

You talk about the people of America, but it is obvious that you forgot the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing that goes along with it. The burden of proof is on the prosecutor, and quit frankly here say isnt enough to put Clemens away.

February 15, 2008  07:56 AM ET

I have no sympathy at all for Clemens. He could have opted out of this--instead, he swore to tell the truth. Isn't it funny however that Bush would consider involving himself in another "conflict" that's none of his business. Great--Clemens can hang out with McGwire, Tejada, Palmeiro, and Barry Bonds, and talk about what might have been.

February 15, 2008  08:00 AM ET

No, and I didn't see John Gotti murder any body either but I beleive and know that he did. So what the heck is your point?

February 15, 2008  08:05 AM ET

And he lied before Congress, so, yes there is a crime that he committed. Honest peole do not lie before Congress. But you are right the burden of proof is on the DOJ and in a court of law but that is still not going to change my thinking on Clemens until he comes up with some better rationalizations than he has so far come up with.

February 15, 2008  08:05 AM ET

For all you Bush haters and Clemens and Bonds haters, what real good does it do to put these guys in prison? Yes, MLB needs to rid its sports of steroids, but there's other ways of doing it. Has it occurred to some of you that nobody has truly PROVED that Clemens took steroids? Why isn't Congress questioning the Players Union Reps? Why isn't Congress questioning ALL OF THE OWNERS and the COMMISSIONER? Why single out a private citizen, ans then try to set a perjury trap? I would LOVE to see the President pardon Clemens if need be.

February 15, 2008  08:06 AM ET

So now what Archie_Bunker...we all, every American has to witness Clemens taking the drugs? We can't rely on someone saying. "I gave Pettite, Knoblach and Clemens HGH or steroids on their direction". Pettite and Knoblach both say, "Yep, I did the PEDs and the person that gave them to me is telling the truth of which I just coroborated. I also know that Clemens did them as well because we talked about donig them." But Clemens says, "He didn't give them to me, even though Pettite is the most honest man I know and he would never lie." And you still believe Clemens. Did you witness him NEVER taking them? You are using the same comment that most used with Mike Vick...how'd that turn out for ya??

February 15, 2008  08:08 AM ET

I'm not crazy about Congrees being involved in this but President Bush should keep his lame-duck nose out of this. But if you or I or Joe Blow lied to a federal garnd jury, we'd be going to jail without any hope of a Presidential pardon.

February 15, 2008  08:11 AM ET

And AAARedskin, have you not seen all the reports that say CLEMENS AND HIS ATTORNEYS WANTED THE HEARING TO CLEAR HIS NAME. The govt. didn't rope or shackle him and make him do what he did the other day. He tried to bully himself in there and make everyone try to believe his lies or his own "misremembering" and it backfired on him. He tried walking through Washington shaking hands and handing out autographs to try and make him look like an upstanding citizen and it got him SQUAT. He should do time and Bonds should do time and truthfully McNamee should do time just like Marion Jones and the rest of the drug providing and drug using idiots.

February 15, 2008  08:12 AM ET

Can you imagine what it would be like in this nation if we has a Congress that would devote its time to real issues....like figuring out a way to bring the price of gasoline down to under $2 a gallon? Devoting all this time and energy to the steroids issue of MLB.....what complete BS! Thanks, Congress....our tax dollars at work!!!
