Cowboys must decide on Adams

In a week, the Cowboys have to decide: Do they make Flozell Adams their franchise player? Should they do so, Adams would cost about $9 million against the 2008 salary cap. Should they elect not to do so, they would risk losing their starting left tackle because he would hit the open market Feb. 29. Adams protects Tony Romo's blind side, and that cannot be understated. He will have a number of false starts during a season, but former offensive line coach Tony Sparano was willing to live with those errors because Adams had to pop out of his stance so quickly.

They can't afford not to Franchise him. Yeah, hes a pain when it comes to false starts (1 or 2 a game), but he is one of the best when it comes to protecting a QB's blind side. There are too many positives with Flo to allow him to hit free agency.

Would love to see him in a Miami uniform.

Too many positives and not enough talent available to replace him. Franchise gives you a year to draft a guy this year and groom him, and in a year come back and revisit the issue.

I understand their situation if they do it, but 9 is a lot of millions..It does change what they can/cannot do in free agency. If their previous drafts were any good, then they have the guy to replace him, Tough call. Looks like Hamlin is out of there if there is no money left and the defensive backfield is no better next year-maybe worse..I would let him walk..

He is good despite the false starts. This is a decision I wouldn't want to make. Unless another good LT comes available in FA, it might be wise to franchise him. Tough one. Real tough. Unlike the McFadden thing a couple of threads over. No debate there. No McFadden. Yes Barber. Yes strenghthen secondary. What good is putting up tons of points only to give them right back?

February 15, 2008  08:30 AM ET

Flozell is just to raw for them not to Franchise him, even though he might jump on the line alot and cost them a few penalties. they wont find another tackle like him.

Why, does the teal and orange highlight his eyes?

February 15, 2008  09:42 AM ET

I'd let him go.

His false starts are usually killers.

I've heard that Flozell is partially deaf in his right ear? Any truth to that? I cannot find it anywhere on the web, specifically Cowboys related sites only. Doug Free will be our future on the line, though I'm not particularly sure if that means left tackle or not. Franchise Flozell now, give him another year, if you are still not ready to start Doug, then franchise him again.

I think that would have come out a long time ago Florida. Do you remember where you heard this? If it's true then maybe they should move him to the right side.

February 15, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Give it some time, JJ will work out a deal with him. He will get signed to a contract, and not cost 9 mil. a year. Say what you want about JJ, but he does take care of valuable and loyal players.

That probably just started as a rumor because of all his false starts. When your a big LT like him, you have to get of the ball quick to take on those increasingly fast D linemen.

February 15, 2008  10:24 AM ET

JJ needs to sign him (I think he will) if not Viva Miami

February 15, 2008  10:38 AM ET

The need to resign him. I can put up with his false starts. You have to remember he is seeing every teams best rusher such as Osi, Trent Cole, and Kevin Carter twice a year. I rather see him false start once or twice rather than get Tony killed.

February 15, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Tackles are hard to come by in this league. More times than none the are left on an island to block. Interior linemen are easier to find and replace.

Amen, He still has a couple more good years in him. A beast at LT is a luxary.

February 15, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Its that lack of defense that killed the Cowboys this year...not the false starts...any coach in the league will tell their line to hold, cut block, chop block, do whatever you have to do to save the QB....they reason that it is only one play of several....He is a good talent...needs a couple of sit-ups though...

February 15, 2008  11:50 AM ET

OK I'll ask the obvious

WHAT KIND OF NAME IS "FLOZELL" ????

Giant fans are hilarious! One week you want to hang your coach and run your QB out of town and the next week you want to bake them a cake. One thing about Cowboy fans are we are there no matter what. Can you G-Men fans say the same, I doubt it. Can you say Dynasty. Win 2 in a row or 3 in 4 years then talk.
