Cincinnati has shown consistent interest in Oakland right-hander Joe Blanton, but the Athletics aren't going to give up Blanton unless they get what they want in return, and what they want is outfielder Jay Bruce, whom the Reds consider untouchable.

Oakland - If we wanted to trade Jay Bruce we would have already and acquired Bedard.

exactly the Reds arn't going to spend one of the best MLB prospect for JOE BLANTON!

February 15, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Wow- I don't even like the Reds and I wouldn't wish a terrible trade like that on any club. Well, unless they were in the AL central perhaps...

February 15, 2008  09:56 AM ET

The A's are out of their minds with their Blanton demands.

February 15, 2008  09:58 AM ET

If the Reds trade Jay Bruce, fans will call for Wayne Krivsky's head.

February 15, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Baseball Prospectus has Bruce as the #1 overall prospect for 2008. Trading him for a pitcher with a career ERA of ~4.0 (and close to 5.0 away) seems fair.

February 15, 2008  11:35 AM ET

The A's know they aren't getting Jay Bruce. Last I heard they were asking for Bailey/Cueto and Joey Votto, which is still too steep a price for Blanton. This report is complete BS and whoever wrote it has no idea what he is talking about. Why would The Rocky Mountain News be reporting about a Reds-As trade anyways?

February 15, 2008  12:59 PM ET

The A's would be d@mn lucky to get any ONE of Bailey, Cueto or Votto for Blanton. He's got Eric Milton written all over him.

February 15, 2008  01:04 PM ET

Easy SantaClause. The reason Rocky Mountain News is reporting around baseball and not just the Rockies is because we have the Cowboy, Tracy Ringolsby. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006 for his contributions as a writer. He knows what he's talkin about. Anyway, the Reds might as well trade Bruce for nothing since they're not going anywhere anyway. What good would it do to keep him?

February 15, 2008  01:30 PM ET

Interesting strategy. We suck, so we might as well trade out best prospects.

Crazy enough to work.

They A's are not asking for Bruce unless its in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way. I'm sure they would love to have him, but there's no way the Reds would give him up for Blanton. The Blanton trade rumors have been covered extensively here in Cincinnati for the past few months and there has never been any indication that Jay Bruce has been involved, mush less holding up a deal.

I guess I'm just kind of irked that some throw away statement from a paper that doesn't cover either team gets thrown up here as if its gospel. I don't care if the "Cowboy" is a hall-of-fame writer (pretty much every big league city has one), he is out of his element here. If we're talking Rockies trade rumors I would take his word for it. Here is what the Red's beat writer, Jon Fay, has to say about it:

http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/redsinsider/2008/02/blanton-update.as p

As stated before, the A's want 2 or 3 of the Red's top prospects which is a hefty asking price in itself to "sette" down from. My guess is that Blanton will be starting for the A's when the season starts unless they're over whelmed. They'll look to move him to a contender at the trading deadline.

As I see it, the Reds need to keep every prospect they have and try to emulate the Florida Marlins teams of the past who used top prospects to win world championships. Lets face it, Blanton is not going to give the Reds anything they dont already have... a mediocre starter at best.... Look what happened with Arroyo last season... With Jay Bruce we have opportunity and upside.. With Blanton, its like Skiing in the rockies>>> ALL DOWN HILL>

There is no way the Reds can make this deal.Bruce is the next great red.

If Bruce is to be such a stud, surely there's better offers out there than Blanton. We all hope that Krivsky doesn't get sucked in.
