Calipari wants an undefeated season

07:24 AM ET 10.08 | John Calipari takes an interesting approach when it comes to motivating his players, including personal challenges. "I tell them, not only do they want to beat Kentucky. They want to beat you as an individual player. You know why? They wanted that scholarship that you got, and they want to prove they're better than you." ... Calipari's comments came on the heels of the fifth-year UK coach's admittance that he wants to go undefeated -- 40-0 -- with a team that features five McDonald's All-Americans as incoming recruits and returns key pieces Alex Poythress and Willie Cauley-Stein from last season. ... "Before I retire, I'd like to coach and undefeated team because they say it can't be done," he said. "Everywhere I've been, 'You can't do this. You can't do that. You'll never do this. You'll never do that.'"

I would think he (and UK fans) would just want to make it back into the NCAAs after getting bounced in Round One of the NIT.

Believe it or not, not everyone wants to play for UK.......

Injuries can change a season very quickly. Last year's team was highly ranked & grossly underachieved. If they stay healthy & play as a team, they should go far (ie. minimum Final 4). Undefeated - - I don't care. Just make sure the losses are before the tourney.

I think every coach wants that......

Yup, ask Mr. Wiggins.

He couldn't take a highly gifted team in Memphis in a weak conference that is Conference USA to an undefeated season. Like CaptMorgen said, be happy you get back into the dance after that debacle of a season last year. Injuries can change that thought process quickly (Nerlens Noel anybody???)

The headline is misleading. He didn't say anything as ridiculous as "I expect this team to go 40-0" . He said he would like to coach an undefeated team at some point.

This team is reminiscent of the 2011-12 one in that it has a dangerous (to the opponent) mix of returning stars and incoming elite talent. I wouldn't expect 40-0. We may see another "Eh, who cares" loss in the SEC Championship Game, like the ones that sparked the 1996 and 2012 teams to bigger things in the Big Dance.
