Ferentz: 'We may never try to return a punt again'

07:23 AM ET 10.09 | No, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz was not making an offhand remark. [Ferentz] said after a fake punt burned his team against Michigan State last week that he was strongly considering never calling for a punt return again. Tuesday, he was asked if he was being facetious. "No, I was being dead serious," Ferentz said. ... Maybe Ferentz's statement Saturday was rash. After a few days, though, he said it stands. Iowa can't defend a fake punt, so Iowa won't call a return. "If you pressed me today, I'd say we may never try to return a punt again," Ferentz said. "To do that, to block guys, you have to turn and go with those guys to shadow them. When you do that, you open the door. Michigan State did a good job of taking advantage of that."

So that's what a $3. 675 Million per year HC salary gets you. Very creative, Coach. What other tricks have you got up your sleeve for the Hawkeyes' visit to the 'Shoe 10/19?

He's going to fake every extra point kick and go for two!

I have always thought Ferentz has done an outstanding job at Iowa. If you look at his record over the years and look at what he has had to work with, he has had a pretty remarkable run.

No punt football and no field goals either. Hmmmm? Me like.

Ferentz has a long contract (through 2018, I think) plus a huge buyout. If I recall, his buyout this year would be almost as much as his remaining contract. Not sure if it drops as he gets closer to the end of his contract. It was a way for Iowa to gurantee he wouldn't leave.

Yeah, but he came there from Texas, so you know it was a step up.

Instead of forsaking punt returns, he might want to figure out what they are doing to tip the other team off. I watched that game (as everyone should have) and even the old guys at the Ice Haus could have gotten a first down. Me included. Either MSU was real lucky, or Iowa is giving away how they're playing the punt.
