The league's weakest arm? Manning's

07:14 AM ET 10.10 | The NFL's most prolific quarterback this season isn't much of a debate. It's crazy that [Peyton Manning] is having a historical season with such diminished arm strength. We heard all offseason that Manning's arm was stronger than the year before, but it's hard to see that when watching him on Game Rewind. The ball flutters when it goes more than 15 yards, but it doesn't matter, because it gets there. Manning has thrown just 13 passes of 20 yards or more all season, but he hasn't needed to throw it deep. (And he's been effective when he does go long.) Manning's season ultimately is proof that the quarterback position is played between the ears. You could make the argument that he has the weakest arm of any starter in the league.

nit picky.

Manning has never thrown a pretty pass. Ryan Leaf did, Jeff George did.

It's not about pretty.

He's "only" gone deep 13 times? They've played 5 games. That's means he's taking deep shots 2 or 3 times a game and, as the author notes, he's been accurate. Sorry he's not going all Daryl Lamonica on everyone, but it seems like it is working out.

Seems to me all his passes have plenty of zip on them. I don't see defenses picking off those wounded ducks.

Think it runs in the family.

I agree.

I was watching a game earlier this season where I was impressed with the velocity he put on a few of his passes.

Unless someone wants to start clocking QB throws like they're MLB pitchers, this topic is entirely subjective.

Exactly. He's thrown 20 TDs and 1 pick. Not bad for a guy with no zip on the ball.

Joe Montana didn't exactly have a rocket arm.

Manning throws timing routes where you don't need as much zip on the ball, the defender has alot less time to react to the ball because its in the air befor he even turns around to look for it.

Arm strength has nothing to do with the ball fluttering out of his hand, it's his release.

You have a prolific QB when he has quality receivers all over the field. No need for the long ball. Move the chains.

They definitely want to keep that defense off the field as much as possible.

That was my SAM of the day.

He's on pace for about 100,000 yards and 500 TD's this year. Who cares about his lack of arm strength?

True. I'm surprised Peyton is still in the league. Not sure that arm is strong enough to be a starter. Need more time to tell.
