Woodson letting guards fight it out

07:17 AM ET 10.10 | J.R. Smith has the inside track on a starting job that, at this point, is his for the taking. Where that leaves Iman Shumpert is unclear, but if he plays like he did Wednesday he may finally be released from Mike Woodson's doghouse. The Knicks opened the preseason with Carmelo Anthony at small forward and Pablo Prigioni and Raymond Felton as the starting guards. Woodson says his plan is to start with a big lineup, featuring Andrea Bargnani at power forward and either Smith or Shumpert at shooting guard. "I'm going to let them two fight it out," Woodson said. The competition began with Shumpert playing a perfect game. He made all seven of his shots and scored 18 points in the Knicks' 103-102 victory over the Boston Celtics. It was an encouraging start since Smith is currently sidelined and may not practice for at least another two weeks.

So Shump had a perfect game, and Smith is hurt and can't even play. Where is the fight then?

Very dumb story. It will be awhile when they would fight it out. And why would you start JR when he has been good as a 6th man and Shumpert as a starter?

Woodson's point is that the starting position hasn't been handed to anyone.....yet.

exactly-there are no consequenses for aonyone deemed 'one of his boys'smith cost that team a shot at the heat with his antics AND he's suspended for drugsand he's going to be handed he starting job ??wtf ?If I were shump I'd demand a trade to where there is actual competence in management

Shhhh - Part of the master plan - Tim Hardaway Jr looked pretty good last night - We might be able to trade JR and his antics as his contract is relatively cheap for the amount of offense he generates.

Look how folks overpaid for Mayo, Kevin Martin for basically the same production...

While that's true let's not forget Shump is injury-prone as well so having him as starter may not be the best for the long haul.

As noted already, Hardaway looked real good as well so he may be the neutrality needed at the 2 spot.

But yes if Utah or Sacramento is interested in JR, they got it.

seriosuly speaking....do you really believe that?is that even a remote possibility ?

Exhibit #A - Knicks are seriously looking how far Shump progresses in his development on both sides of the ball - I think that has been apparent.

Exhibit #B - Why did the Knicks draft a SG like Tim Hardaway Jr. when they have both Shump and JR Smith when they really needed young big man?

Exhibit #C - Why jettison Grunwald (Offered the deal to JR Smith) and hire Steve Mills?

Exhibit #D - JR Smith's breakout season a la Jamal Crawford and salary is very enticing to some team looking for priduction from a swingman.

Connect the dots my brother, connect the dots...

I like starting stumpert due to his defensive capabilities... He also gets comfortable over time on offense. JR is capable of coming off the bench and quickly finding his stroke. Not to mention you give JR responsibilities and then he shows his 2 cent brain. Keep on the bench and keep him in check
