07:24 AM ET 10.10 | One of the brightest college students in the country also happens to be Michigan State star punter Mike Sadler. [Sadler] graduated in three years with a 3.9 grade-point average in applied engineering sciences and is currently pursuing a Ph.D in economics. And while Sadler has hopes of making the NFL, he is also applying for a Rhodes Scholarship, which is awarded to 32 young Americans each year to study at the University of Oxford in England. ... Sadler, a Forest Hills Northern graduate, has the ambition to play in the NFL and become a Rhodes Scholar. Doing both is something only three men -- Pat Haden, Myron Rolle and Byron White -- have ever achieved. [MSU athletic director Mark Hollis] said he was trying to arrange for Haden, the USC athletic director and former quarterback, to speak with Sadler about the process.

Glad this young man is a SPARTAN. GO GREEN!

I know he's only a punter, but it's good to see a scholarship football player succeed academically and athletically. Starting your PhD while playing football is pretty darn good.

prurient---adjective--having or encouraging an excessive interest in sexual matters.

Didn't Ian Gold do something similar a while ago on Michigan? Oh wait he wasn't getting his PhD, I believe he was going into med school - in any event, love to see athletes excel at something BESIDES athletics...........

Wow a great GPA with a REAL major, graduated in 3 years and working on his PhD. I am impressed.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ....
ESPN reported that Clowney is/was majoring in African Studies.
I wonder how many players across the nation are majoring in General Studies?
Half the A&M team majors in Agricultural Management.
LSU players like Sports Management.
Iowa players like Interdepartmental Studies.
Cincinnati players like Criminal Justice.
Clemson = Sociology.

It's called "clustering"
