07:20 AM ET 10.11 | That crater in the Yankees' pitching rotation may just be filled by Masahiro Tanaka. According to industry sources, the Yankees are going to be serious players in the [Tanaka] bidding battle next month. A person familiar with the Yankees' offseason strategy said Tanaka is a priority in the wake of Andy Pettitte retiring, the uncertain future of Hiroki Kuroda and the physical question marks smothering Michael Pineda and Manuel Banuelos. Not only would landing Tanaka improve the rotation, it would appease a wary fan base. ... What is Tanaka worth? Based on one scout's opinion, more than Yu Darvish, who cost the Rangers $111.7 million. The Rangers bid $60 million then signed Darvish to a six-year deal worth $51.7 million. "He is better than Darvish because he is a strike thrower," the scout said.

It's a crap shoot, but if Tanaka turns out to be as good as Darvish, $12 mil/year for a frontline starter is a bargain.

What if he is the next Dice K?

I had all but forgotten about Pineda.

agreed. However, the Yanks are flush with cash and the posting fee doesn't count against the 2014 cap. Given their financial limitations this offseason, I think they should pull the trigger and take a chance.

And if he turns into another Igawa, oh well. Tanaka will take Igawa's place in Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

That is basically what they paid Kuroda and Pettit and $5 million more than Hughes got. Add in at least $12 million from Arod off the books if he gets half a year and money and the payroll is not the issue. Heck it is a million less than Youkalis got to rehab his back again.

What I find especially amusing about Dole is his preconceived notion that anyone opposed to dear leader is southern.
I'm from Massachusetts, liberal, bleeding heart, nearly socialist Massachusetts. Been here for over 45 years. Only southern exposure I have is my stint in the Army, Ft. Benning GA.
So I am many things, a right wing extremist, I like firearms, I drive a truck. However, I am not a Christian Conservative, nor am I from the south, or identify with them.

always a bit skeptical with pitchers from japan....i'd like to see them make a serious run for a price or scherzer instead

October 11, 2013  09:48 AM ET

If the Yankees are so concerned with the luxury tax, why would they go and throw out $100MM for a guy from Japan?

We've got a bad track record when it comes to Japanese pitchers.
