Pau Gasol unlikely to take pay cut to stay with LA

12:20 AM ET 10.12 | The Los Angeles Lakers have an interesting dilemma heading in to next season. The team will have just two players - Steve Nash and Robert Sacre - under contract and they will need to find a way to spend their money wisely. The Lakers will hope to attract a few big name free agents, but what will that mean for veterans Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol? Bryant will undoubtedly be brought back and finish his career as a member of the Lakers with hopes of winning one more championship, but he may have to do so without his sidekick Gasol. If the Lakers come at Gasol with a low-ball offer and ask him to take a pay cut, it's likely not going to work out.

Let the market dictate how much Gasol is paid. If another team is willing to pay him more then the Lakers are willing to pay him. Then he should sign with that team. Unless Pau wants to play only for a team with a chance to win the championship. Then his options might be limited.

But who knows. The Lakers might trade him in the middle of the season to avoid losing him for nothing.

Why should Pau take a pay cut to stay with a team that is 5 years from winning? The Fakers need Pau more than he needs them.

Why would a top ten 33 year old center take a pay cut in the NBA?

They don't need pau at all with the hat coach and system.

With the absence of bigs in the league, and Howard gone. They at least need him until they can find a suitable replacement.

I agree. Where are the Lakers going to find "a suitable top ten center" to replace Pau??

For a normal team, yes....But mikes preferred system requires guys that can run and shoot long jumpers and bigs that can movePau is not that playerSince they chose mike over Dwight , clearly they are committed to him, so there is no reason to try and keep stuffing square pegs into round holes. They can now , with their open cap next year, get players that fit his system

jgb, good point and maybe that is why the Lakers didn't really want Howard, as he is not "a player that can run and shoot long jumpers". Pau can shoot the 10/15 foot jumper.

That is a sad reflection on the state of NBA centers when Gasoft is mentioned as top ten...

I agree, but the fact remains that Pau Gasol is a top ten center in the NBA.

That's why it will take 5 years before they're relevant again.
