10:57 AM ET 10.12 | The letter arrived from an old friend sometime in 2010-11, two years after Dallas Eakins became coach of the Marlies. It included hearty congratulations on his work in Toronto up to then, a life and family update and, at the end, a special request. If Eakins ever needed another assistant coach or, better yet, made it to the NHL and expanded his staff, please keep his contact info on file. It was signed "Igor Korolev." "Talking about that letter still haunts me, gives me goosebumps," said Eakins of his Leafs teammate killed in the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash two years ago with 44 mates, passengers and crew.

Really, really sad.

But still better than talking about the Oilers.

Or .... coaching them. And to think that Eakins could've had Igor Korolev as his assistant. Instead, he has Steve (Own Goal) Smith and Kelly (Bull-In-China-Shop) Buchberger to work with.

A couple of years ago the Oilers management realized they needed a true, genuine, bonafide NHL coach to lead the young Oilers out of the dumps and into respectability. So .... they went out and searched really hard and ..... hired Motivational Speaker Ralph Krueger, who honed his hockey coaching skills bouncing around Europe for many years in such hockey beds as Switzerland, Italy, Latvia, Germany and Austria. That didn't work too well, did it?

So now, after a couple more #1 picks overall, the Oilers brass again realized that they need a true, genuine, bonafide, experienced NHL coach to lead those 1st overall picks out of the basement and into respectability. So ... they fired their Motivational Speaker Coach and went looking!

They'll get it right this time, right? So, they bypassed genuine NHL coaches like Lindy Ruff and, after diligent search, found their man in Dallas Eakins with a wealth of coaching experience in ..... the AHL! But .....has ZERO (0), NIL, NADA, head coaching experience in the NHL.

Only in Edmonton! Let the rebuilding continue!

BTW, once again they're the early leaders for that 1st overall pick!

Edmonton could always suck some other team into giving them a real defenceman for Mr Shmeed - Philly, Buffalo, Florida, Nashville take note - might even be able to fish them into a forward prospect too -eh. Always liked Igor.

Problem is, nobody outside of Edmonton believes their D-men are worth a bucket of camel spit. Very telling that none of the players they put on waivers were picked up by anybody.

Something to take under consideration when fleeing the NHL for the homeland.
