Umpire Joe West angers Red Sox batters

11:05 AM ET 10.13 | The Tigers' collection of pitchers in their combined one-hitter had a lot to do with that misery for the Red Sox, but a lot of that anger, disappointment and sometimes quizzical reactions were directed at home plate umpire Joe West. Several of the Red Sox players had conversations with West on check swings and called third strikes. Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino would not directly answer a question when asked about West's strike zone being --generous" but did say that emotions do take over when a player is in the heat of an at-bat. "It's one of those things," Victorino, who was one of the Red Sox who voiced his opinion to the home plate umpire, said. "He's the one behind the plate. He's controlling the game and again it's not any if, ands or buts. It's his game. You feel like you are not and sometimes you are wrong. I know on a couple of pitches I was wrong, when I asked him I thought that ball wasn't a strike and I went back and looked at it and I was wrong."

The Red Sox spent way too much time grumbling about the strike zone. West was calling it consistently throughout the game. Perhaps if they tried swinging their bats instead of watching every close pitch and hoping for a walk, they might have actually gotten a few hits. In any case, a one-hitter wouldn't have taken damn near four hours.

It cut both ways. He was consistent. Could have called more strikes. good game, good series really good teams.

Tough to **** about the umpire when you only get one hit.

As a threshold matter, why is MLB letting Joe West's crew work playoff games?

It's time to make it merit-based. West is horrible, even if he was consistent yesterday.

OK, but unless I missed it they got the close calls right.

He was bad, and arrogant, but it didn't stop Peralta from getting the big hit. Would have liked to see a three pitcher no-hitter, but far from a jem, six walks.

**** up Sox.....And better luck next year. Not

October 13, 2013  11:58 AM ET

Since when is **** up a bad word???

October 13, 2013  11:58 AM ET

The Red Sox are crybabies, playing for a classless organization.

They've worked the count all season; why change now?
This time the Ump became part of the defensive team.

I meant "horrible" generally, not specific to yesterday.

Not all those 17 strikeouts were on the old Ump.

You have to be a sox fan. But would be crying if it was the TIGERS?

QUOTE(#14):

I'm a Sox fan, but the guys were taking poor half swings at some pitches, then taking strikes that were obvious.I despise Joe West, but this one is on the Sox hitters and their hitting coaches.

I agree. They looked impatient and confused the entire game.
