Jets QB predicts his own greatness

07:17 AM ET 10.17 | For years, Bill Belichick has had the easy choice in throwing Tom Brady at the Jets, while Gang Green has countered without an elite quarterback in the prime of his career. Geno Smith believes in his heart he will change all that. Believes in his heart Belichick and everybody else better get him now before he grows up. Nothing that has happened on his humbling journey through the NFL has shaken his belief he will one day be the elite quarterback the Jets have lusted for since Joe Namath, since forever. I asked Smith Wednesday: Do you really believe in your heart you will be an elite quarterback? "Yes," he replied. Why? What tells you that? "Simply because of my work ethic," he said. "As far as the physical standpoint, talent, I've competed with every single guy out there and I know where I stand."

Good luck, dude.

I'm sure he appreciates your kind words, Stewie.

It's nice to have dreams, but be realistic. COME ON MAN!!!

Since he's been there?

The Jets seemed too have changed for the better.

Because where they were at with Sancheze, they were pretty awful!

Asking a young QB this kind of question, and posting it up in your newspaper, is pretty unfair. What else is he going to say but "yes".

Shame on the NYPost hack.

October 17, 2013  07:46 AM ET

As I recall, he had a rather high opinion of himself on draft day, too.

October 17, 2013  07:47 AM ET

TH,

Oh yeah.

Although he seemed like a whiney a/s by being taken in the 2nd round and walked off?

He's a definite improvement over Sanchez.

Time will tell how close he comes too the truth ,and Jet's fans as well.

I got kinda tired of Rex and Mark 3 times a week.

October 17, 2013  07:48 AM ET

So.... They ask him the question, then criticize him when he answers it... Got it.

What did you expect him to say?

I don't understand why people have a problem when players set high expectations. I wish every player would do the same thing. Big Ben, Eli and Flacco all said they are "elite" and they backed it all up.

October 17, 2013  07:50 AM ET

That's true and a trick question as well.

Stop being so reasonable. That will not be tolerated here.

Waah!

Yea he will be an elite QB with the Jets....look what they have to compare him to Sanchez (?).
Any other team thou he's just a QB.

October 17, 2013  07:59 AM ET

I guess we'll se what his track record is,by the end of the season.

and you base a player's success after his rookie year?

Nope,

But it might give a little more insight, on what he can improve in the next year.

All Geno has shown to this point are moments where he displays potential. Since this is the New York media and they are writing about the Jets, let's start talking about beating Tom Brady, Super Bowls and being an elite QB. That method worked so well with Mark Sanchez, after all.
