Cubs seeking a bilingual manager?

07:23 AM ET 10.17 | During his days as a Spanish-speaking minor leaguer in the Astros' organization, Luis Gonzalez would commute to work with his Ford Explorer full of Latin teammates. "I never drove to the stadium alone," Gonzalez laughed as he recalled the help he provided. The Cubs apparently are looking for someone to provide that assistance on the field. Three of the four publicized candidates for manager -- Manny Acta, Rick Renteria and Dave Martinez -- are fluent in Spanish. That doesn't necessarily eliminate A.J. Hinch, but the Cubs are expected to have more of a Spanish-speaking influence on their staff in a strong effort to deliver a clear message in aiding the likes of their prized young Latin players, such as Starlin Castro, Javier Baez, Jorge Soler and Albert Almora.

QUOTE(#2):

So does this mean that managers who are english speaking only are becoming obsolete?

Not if they have a bench coach that can translate.

They could hire Brady Anderson or Mike Piazza and have a bisexual manager.

Another example of what is wrong with this country, these guys come over here to play baseball along with the culture of this country not a foreign language. Maybe the MLB managers will start doing what most of us has to do now - Press One for English - Press two for some other language.

They just need to explain to Castro what a middle finger means so the manager can convey what he thinks of him.

Puig won't even talk to guys who speak Spanish, he's like royalty or something.

Just a thought: Hire the best manager you can and then hire an English/Spanish teacher to work with the players who need it.

Dave Martinez would be a good choice. Solid baseball guy and he's spent time coaching a young team.

What a nonsensical article. The way things are going in MLB shouldn't they hire a manager who is fluent in Korean and Japanese?

The Tribune desperate to deflect attention away from the fact that two years into the Epstein era the Cubs are still awful and have little prospect of that changing anytime soon. But the real estate development is moving forward!

The way the Cubs develop talent, they could hire Cheech and Chong...

"Hey, man I think you're up. Dude, you're gonna need a bat! It's that long wooden thing in the rack over there. No, no, you hold the skinny end!"

The perfect choice to land the Cubs job since he also spent time tagging Sandberg's wife.

Maybe they should look to the experience of the Montreal Canadiens and hiring bilingual coaches.

They probably should look to the experience of successful teams and hire the best person.

A statement with no merit. Their farm system currently ranks second in MLB.
