An underachieving Clowney

07:26 AM ET 10.17 | What a difference a year makes for South Carolina star Jadeveon Clowney. The Gamecocks defensive end was never a realistic Heisman Trophy contender despite having a large number of the media in his corner. But Clowney was supposed to have more of an impact on the Gamecocks' games this fall. And that just hasn't been the case. Clowney has two sacks and 13 tackles in five games played on the year, but the various ailments that he has encountered have derailed his season. And he has not exactly endeared himself to his coaches for both his play and some off the field comments and actions. Of course, offenses are running plays away from him, so his numbers have suffered. But a player of his caliber should be affecting a game more often.

Maybe he is intentionally taking plays off because he doesn't want to be drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Haven't watched many of his games but I would assume offenses are double teaming, chipping him and/or assigning help in some other way against him. That would make him appear to be an underachiever.

Yep. The more he played the more film there was on him and the better the opposition knew how to allow for him. And I'm sure SEC schools spare no expense when it comes to huge staffs of assistants breaking down film.

The fact that he came out of high school with an inordinate amount of media love and predictions of domination does not mean he's underachieving. It just means he's a player with really good measurables.

He never impressed me as that smart. I figure he's scared about injury and just trying to protect the merchandise for the big payday. The guy has shown this season that he's really not concerned about winning more than about Clowney: he won't mind being drafted by the Jags or the Little Sisters of the Poor provided he gets his.

His conditioning seems to be an issue. He has looked winded at times.

Once a CLOWN, always a LOSER in the SEC....

He says he's injured.

And he has looked completely out of place on some plays and in some games. Is he a student of the game and his opponent, or does he just try to get by on talent alone? There is more to football than just strapping it up and hitting people.

I would be wary of spending a high draft pick on this guy if he hasn't shown the dedication to the film room. He won't last in the league if he doesn't.

DC, There are/were quite a few good college defensive players that were double teams in college. Do you thing that Clay Matthews III was ever double teamed at USC? Clowney is a very good player, but I don't buy that excuse of "double teaming". There is something wrong with Clowney.

Clowney has to play thru injuries and double/triple teams, if he expects to be a 1st round pick in the NFL.

Didn't look like he was under-achieveing as USC Jr beat us by 150! :-(

May he be a non-factor in Tennessee's upset of the Capons this Saturday.

Hasn't he been dealing with some injuries?

he would have been a top 5 if he took the year off and trained..he doesnt have to play thru all that to be a 1st rounder

IMO, if Clowney doesn't start producing more this year then the he will be a middle to late 1st round pick, if he might just be another Manti Te'o and go in the early 2nd round.

Disagree. The hype has already worked for Clowney: he may not be drafted No. 1 - that's probably Bridgewater at this point - but he will be drafted in the first round. Someone GM and/or coach will "fall in love" with him. Clowney could be the biggest con since Brian Bosworth. "The Boz" was hyped into the biggest contract in Seahawk history and the biggest rookie contract in NFL history to that time (1987). Clowney does have more talent than "The Bust," though. Still, Clowney gets injured, he gets nada.

Who Clay Matthews or Clowney?
