07:26 AM ET 10.18 | It's early in their offseason, but the White Sox made a splash on Thursday night. A source confirmed to the Tribune the Sox are set to sign Cuban slugger Jose Abreu, pending a physical or any last-minute snags. Several reports Thursday night put the deal between the Sox and the first baseman at six years and $68 million. ... Sox general manager Rick Hahn declined comment Thursday. Calls to Abreu's agents were not returned. Abreu's signing likely would mean the end of veteran Paul Konerko's career with the Sox. After his 15th season with the club, the Sox captain with 434 home runs and 1,390 RBIs overall in his career said he needed a month to decide whether he would retire from the game or play one more season. He said in September that if he returned he would prefer it would be with the Sox.

Konerko will be missed He had a great run for the W. Sox. But the time is right for him to move on.

Peter Gammons on the radio as I type this, says this guy is not very athletic.

Slow bat speed, so he wonders if Abreu will be able to hit major league fast balls? (Don't the latin players usually have trouble with breaking pitches?) But he said this guy has tremendous power. For $68M he better do something right.

I guess this means the Sox are stuck with Viciedo in left, I thought they might move him to first.

I am hoping they can acquire a solid upgrade at 3rd and C. They need it to have any chance to compete next year.

Hate to see Konerko play for another team. He's almost done, but he's had a great career in Chicago.

Great, so they paid all that money to get the new Ken Phelps? Tee off on junk but get blown away by good FBs?

Whoever this guy is and no matter what he's already done in other leagues, he STILL has to prove himself in MLB.

Abreu could b another Puig Get off to a rocket start, but as teams see him and find his weakness and eventually come back to a normal .300 hitter. every one knew Puig was not going to hit .360 all season.

Puig knew...but he also knew that all of his triples would be dingers...He was wrong about that as well.
