Indiana will fire Sampson soon

This is nothing more than a little dance Indiana officials have to do, a procedural two-step orchestrated by the school's legal beagles before IU does what it needs to do and will do in less than a week's time -- fire Kelvin Sampson. This is about appearances, window dressing, about looking like IU gave Sampson a chance to address the charges in the NCAA's letter of allegations. This is about ensuring that the university doesn't get slammed down the road the way Ohio State did, when it lost a wrongful termination suit filed by former coach Jim O'Brien. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I dont know well I guess we'll find out

February 16, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Jim O'Brien won a total less than 10 million including interest.

Even if Sampson where to prevail in the NCAA after being fired, it will take 4-5 years to play out.

The potential damage to UI basketball for keeping him is far worse.

He's gone.

IU is screwed. They won't be able to compete again after the sanctions until 2012 at least. These sanctions will be harsh because he broke probation and they hired him on probation.

Wasn't there a song in the '80s called "Dirty, Dirty"? Sampson has rewritten the definition of the word when it comes to b-ball. No integrity whatsoever.

February 16, 2008  11:40 AM ET

McRobbie resembles Senator Mitchell a bit, no? He might have to come out w/ his own Mitchell Report giving Sampson the hook. And Kelvin has no one else to blame but his own dang dumbself....

February 16, 2008  01:14 PM ET

Bring back Bob Knight? I had to put a question mark on that.

February 16, 2008  02:23 PM ET

You have to fire Sampson to show the NCAA that you're trying to do the right thing as a university. It's just too bad. One of the best seasons since Knight left, and now the coach is a screw up with the NCAA and he has to be fired. IU needs to look inside the Hoosier family for the next coach.

February 16, 2008  02:26 PM ET

I'd say Bob Knight is lookin pretty good right now!

February 16, 2008  03:10 PM ET

this means eric gordan is going pro after this season.

February 16, 2008  03:36 PM ET

Instead of Samspon looking to sue IU, I think IU should be looking to sue Sampson. If I were them I would try to get back every dime they paid him. They took a big chance on him and it blew up in their face. They hired him and he was warned specifically not to do this. To me that violates his terms of employment, and probably his contract. I just don't think Sampson should be in a posiiton where he should benefit from cheating and getting fired. Good riddance, he can't get the hell out of town fast enough for me.

February 16, 2008  03:41 PM ET

As an Indiana fan, I've always thought we should have kept Knight, but it's a bit late for that.

February 16, 2008  05:36 PM ET

Bring Knight back on a 1 or 2yr contract and let him retire as IU coach!

February 16, 2008  07:34 PM ET

Knight will never come back to I.U. Too much bad blood between him and the administration. But what embarasment he brought to I.U. over the years pales in comparison to the humiliation and penalties they're about to go through with the NCAA. Knight never broke the recruiting rules, his players graduated, he was a benefactor to many players and also to the history department at I.U. and his teams won three national championships. In retrospect, Knight gets the last laugh after all. And I.U. inherits Sampson's penalties and legacy as a chronic cheater.

February 16, 2008  08:31 PM ET

You did it to yourselfs. You fire one of the greats coachs ever to coach the game and brought in dirt. Bobby had a temper but he was clean.

February 16, 2008  11:26 PM ET

where the heck is UAB memphis in fan nation?

nothing is even mentioned and Memphis barely wins by 1

how bout some respect?

February 17, 2008  08:46 AM ET

What? No calls to re-hire Mike Davis?

What? No calls to re-hire Mike Davis?

February 17, 2008  09:06 AM ET

I am a Big 10 (Ohio State) fan stranded in Texas...the once proud IU program has never really been the same since Bob Knight was canned... know Davis had a good run one year but it just isn't the same...makes me sad more than anything else...just another reason for me to listen to more "Big 10 sucks" talk from the locan Big 12 fan base. Help...............

February 17, 2008  12:02 PM ET

Indiana B-ball program = t**s up.

February 18, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Indiana gets what it deserves. They didnt appreciate Mike Davis and tolerated Bob Knights abusive and bullying. So like Knight, Sampson should be under a zero tolerance policy, after all choking a kid is just as worse as making extra phone calls, right? I like Knights excuse also, "repositioning on the floor" during practice. If I didnt have two good eyes, good vision to boot and common sense I would have brought that line.
