03:09 PM ET 10.18 | Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has struggled greatly over the first month and a half of the NFL regular season, but many initially pointed toward his previously reconstructed knee as the reason for the drop in production. Early in the season, it was clear that Griffin lacked any confidence and that he was unable to step into his throws, but now there is a much greater concern. Griffin has had issues throwing the ball outside the numbers and NFC personnel members are saying that the former No. 2 overall pick still struggles to read defensive coverages.

Chalk it up to another off-season of 32 DCs looking at read-option films and figuring out what to do about it.

Doh! You don't think teams have had enough time figure out how to show a second year QB enough different looks to confuse him? If RGIII is as smart as they say he is, he will figure it out. Then again, his coaches might stop him from taking advantage of it when he does.

Well, IMO, when RGIII lost the ability to run, he lost he ability to "read defenses".

How is RGIII going to figure out defenses, when he can't run??? He was drafted by the Skins, mainly because of his "running ability".

People keep blaming the Skin's dor RG not running, but that is incorrect. Both he and his father have come out and said that HE doesn't want to run the read option and that he wants to be known for his passing not running ability. I'm not sure what is causing all this - but his pases against my cowboys were all over the place.

what was RGIII's Wonderlic score?

October 18, 2013  10:36 PM ET

Might it be possible that he is the savior some expected?

...just throwing that out there.

Coaching.

He can only run the plays that are called.

From what the announcers were claiming during the Skins/Cowboys game, they made it sound like RGIII rarely goes through his progressions...

But rather that all the play-action / read-option movement buys him enough time to only need worry about focusing on one receiving target per play.

Not sure how true that is. But considering the way this season has played out it does sound feasible.

That's (Un)-believable.

Correct.

That's what happens when you take a QB#2 overall, who just a year prior was projected as an NFL WR before being catapulted by a ton of media hype. Kind of like if Jadaveon Clowney had come out last spring.

October 19, 2013  12:33 AM ET

He had an offseason of rehab. He missed pre-season. Then, week 1, he jumps in the full-speed drivers seat. He's still a little bit aware of his knee. It's just going too fast right now, if he can stay healthy it will slow back down a little.

The ferret, or ferret jr., could help him out with play calling but don't count on that.

" ... One NFC personnel director observed ... 'He's not very good throwing outside the numbers or reading coverages.'"

FanSided does his all the time - they atribute a quote to a unnamed "insider" hoping to add credibility to their opinion. FanSided = bloggers. I doubt if they actually hit the streets and put microphones in front of people.

October 19, 2013  08:40 AM ET

I was fine with the article until the end where he says they should replace him with Cousins if "He" doesn't get it together. Just too early to give up on a guy you invested so much in.

Here's another observation the the FanSided bloggers could use:

One high ranking official <me> observed that RGIII's receivers drop a lot of passes.

October 19, 2013  08:54 AM ET

" NFC personnel members " Is that really a job? I never see it listed anywhere. Could be the guy who hands out the jerseys.

October 19, 2013  09:10 AM ET

Could be the read option is dead and III just isn't that good of a QB.

Thank you I understand hjes thrown some really off passes but I've also saw a large portion of drops, even brady looks bad when his receivers are dropping balls

And .. Brady doesn't throw many passes "outside the numbers" because it's not his strength.

RGIII was a prolific pocket passer in college. He ran a passing spread with multiple looks including a few read option looks, but his strengths are passing and tempo. He throws the best intermediate and deep ball I've seen in quite a while for a kid coming out of college. The 'Skins are just using him as a weapon with the "flavor of the day" read option.
