Yankees unhappy with Pettitte
While Pettitte might be acclaimed as "St. Andy" by the blathering bureaucrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform for what they feel was the forthrightness in the sworn testimony he gave them regarding his involvement with human growth hormone, I can assure you he is now regarded as something else by Yankee officials. How about disingenuous for starters? Or duplicitous? The fact is, Hank Steinbrenner has a right to feel Pettitte duped him when on the eve of the winter meetings in Nashville, the quiet and sensitive 35-year old lefty called GM Brian Cashman to inform him he was ready to accept the Yankees' standing one-year, $16 million offer. At the time, there was elation all around, especially from Cashman, who used Pettitte's "I shall return" proclamation as the incentive for walking away from a deal for the Twins' Johan Santana - a deal he never wanted to make. With Pettitte taking up $16 million in payroll, the Yankees could no longer afford Santana, Cashman argued, and Hal Steinbrenner, Hank's partner and the primary financial expert in the business, agreed.

do the yankee's really have a problem with signing someone who's juiced?
no, they have a ton of them. suspect the problem is with one of their special players talking about it.

NY Daily News writers will be blocked from talking to Andy and banned from his space in the club house before opening day at the rate this paper is investigating this all. Love it or hate it, today's (Sunday 2-17) NY Daily News sports is a must-read if you have any interest in Pettitte.

I wonder if this is some attempt to prevent others from talking about their (or other's) involvement in steroid use over the years... Petite did the right thing by telling the truth about Clemens... the consequence of lying would have been a 10ft x 10ft cell with Barry Bonds...
Though, having said that, the Yankees have every reason to be p'd about this... just like the Indians do about Byrd or any other team that has signed someone to a contract who used steroids... I wonder if they have any legal recourse in regards to negating their contracts with them... Most likely not because the player's union would definitely have their say about it...

pw ...Do you really believe there is a team in baseball that does not have "juiced players?".And I do mean playerssss..

The players Union refused the Owners request for steroid testing in the last MLB contract. It was dropped by the owners to avoid a strike...Everyone knows , on both sides, that a whole lot of guys owe much of their success to steroids..As do players in the NFL..

50, you believe the yankee's would have chosen Santana over Pettitte if they had only known all the facts? they already knew who was juicing on their roster before 2008.
I wasn't saying only the yankees have juiced players. i was saying, this story is erroneous. because the yankees have juiced players, have had juiced players, and will continue to have juiced played. this is just cashman and hank looking for an angle to shave a few bucks.

pw..OK. No, they were not going to trade their young pitchers no matter what. The Yankees and the Red Sox were just playing games with the Twins to make it look like they were trying...No one was happier to see him go to the Mets than them...

INTEGRITY ISSUES IN TODAYS WORLD OF SPORTS:
Clemens, I'll juice to continue to make more money, Pettitte, I'll take the money before they find out I juced, Schilling, I'll take the money before they find out I'm an A Hole.

50, exactly. this is just a smokescreen. the yankees knew who was juicing, didnt care, and weren't making that trade for santana.

50 year fan, then your point is that everyone else is doing it, even though there is no proof? Do you believe that every team in the NFL has also been taping signals? Sounds like the same kind of excuse I've been hearing all year in defense of the Pats...

it would have been better to have let Pettitte walk away and gone after Santana, assuming one could have gotten Santana without giving away more than one young pitcher -- that's a big assumption. the Yankees are very very loyal to their veteran players -- look how long it took them to let go of Bernie, and they're still holding onto Abreu and Matsui and Damon -- it's just too bad that SenMitchell, who has ties to BoSox and the anti-Steinbrenner folks, targeted Pettitte and Clemens, and then his admiring Congressional Democrats like little hatchet man Waxman picked up the bait and ran with it -- now Pettitte is a rat and his 'sensitivity' shattered -- can he still pitch effectively? only time will tell, and of course the Yankee haters and conscienceless sports writers will be on him continuously -- the sooner the better for real games start so we can see if he can still win games against top-tier competition

Where I come from and it's a situation like this you never stab your friend's in the back. That may sound old fashion or out dated but that's just the way I played the game. Don't tell me that every player in that club house doesn't feel a little betrayed. I know I would. If I'm Andy, I wouldn't turn my back. People have very long memories.

It still amazes me how Yankee fans can insult Senator Mitchell's integrity... obviously they haven't a clue to what type of individual he is... former Senate Majority Leader... brokered peace in Ireland... but of COURSE it's his fault, not the Yankees or the individuals who took steroids fault... and, by the way, the Red Sox had a dozen or so current or former players named in the report as well... just because the Yankees had some of their top players named and more then their "fair share" they are now whining about it...
Hmmm... no one thinks that it is funny that they had a significant number of players juicing it AND that they won so many World Series wins? No connection there...

Cryptoe ...There is no proof,BECAUSE there is NO testing for steroid use. And no reliable test for HGH use......Got it....Look at it this way, If I do not test anybody for color blindness, does that mean no is color blind because it has never been proved??? of course not. The Union refuses to have its members be tested for steroids....Why is that??? If all players were tested, NOOO team would be clean. If they did start testing, you would see the greatest weight loss program in the history of humanity take place over the winter..
Do not care about the Pats and the tape thing. My favorite team going back to Y. A. Tittle beat them down in the Super Bowl..The others can whine about losing to them...

50yearfan, that is not what I'm saying... I believe that many players were juicing and anyone who thinks that their team is steroid-free does not have their eyes open... MLB and the player's unions are the reasons for why their is this taint on the game... having said that, that is our OPINION... it is possible, though highly unlikely, that steroid use wasn't significant... trust me, I don't believe that either... too bad that they hadn't focused on this issue years ago... the fact that Bonds has the HR record really p's me off... he doesn't deserve it, that is for sure...
The comparison was for the benefit of those who complain that Pats fans comments that there should be a complete investigation into every football team on spying since there are so many former coaches and analysts (Jimmy Johnson, John Madden) have stated that they have done the same thing... that was the point I was trying to make... (I know, different discussion)...
And note, I wasn't whining about the Pats losing... the Giants, while they didn't "beat them down" (I wouldn't call a 3 point win a beat down, nor I think would you if you looked at it objectively), definitely deserved the win... they wanted it more, that is for sure... all in all, was a great SB...

Can everybody please stop in categorizing steroid users, such as Canseco, Jason Giambi and Jay Gibbons etc, with those who used HGH? Admittedly, both are now illegal, but both substances were used by players for different reasons. Steroid uses were always trying to gain an advantage over their competitors (and teammates), whereas most HGH users, such as Pettitte, Knoblauch and Brian Roberts, were using HGH to get back on the field quicker from injuries.
Does anybody in these forums understand why players (such as Curt Schilling) have cortisone injections? It is so they can come back sooner from an injury. Is there any difference between the HGH usage by Pettitte and the recent cortisone shot received by Schilling? Yes, but the only difference is that HGH is (now) a banned substance in MLB, perceived to be anabolic (which it is not). While HGH is a hormone, the type of cortisone used in these rejuvinating shots, is actually a man-made STEROID! Do we now have to ban cortisone shots? Probably not. Are Schilling, and the thousands of others who have received cortisone injections, now "juicers?" Of course not. They are getting these shots to get back on the field quicker and help their teammates. There is actually a limit on how many cortisone injections a person can receive because they are steroids. Pettitte was not trying to gain an advantage over other teams, as Clemens appeared to have been doing. Were players from the 1950's and 1960's cheaters when they took amphetamines so they can play through the pain?
I respect Pettitte's courage to try to get back on the field sooner, but I do not respect his testifying against his former teammate. All Andy could have said is yes, I did HGH on several occasions, but I did not see Clemens doing anything illegal. If you want to really go after a "tell all" player from the Mitchell Report, attack Larry Bigbie, the former Oriole outfielder. He ratted out about a half-dozen former teammates, including Brian Roberts, but I suppose Bigbie is less juicy than Pettitte vs. Clemens.
So please, let's separate the so-called "juicers" and "cheaters" from the HGH users. While both items are illegal, the thought process of using each is like night and day.

OK, I just had to set this straight. The ONLY reason so many yankees were in the report is because an NY trainer decided to fess up. I guarantee you that if mitchell could get every clubs trainer around the league to talk, every team would have just as many, if not more. Get a boston trainer to cooperate and see how many Red Sox are juiced. Sox fans live in their own little bubble, and believe that only the Yanks are doing it and thats just not the case. Thats something a team from the Boston area, say the Patriots perhaps?, would do. Everybody is doing in the league. So far only the Yankees got caught. (It does help that a boston congressman did the investigation though)

So basically everyone that calls into question the Mitchell Report because former Senator Mitchell did it and is a part-owner of the Red Sox is saying that he is biased and therefore this report is null and void?
Hmmm... doesn't that mean that everyone who routs for a certain team should have their opinion automatically voided just because of that bias? To me that kind of takes away from the need for FanNation, right? If you believe in something, you're biased so your opinion is rendered null and void...
Personally I wish that there was a way that we could march every single former player, coach, and owner up and have them swear under oath to what they did and knew... if there was a way to get MLB to pay for this (vs. taxpayers) then it would probably gain a lot of support... I wonder if Uncle Sam could just send MLB and the player's union a bill for this, especially since it's their fault that they are in this mess...
