Gophers recruiting rivals territory

Wisconsin and Iowa have to be concerned that Minnesota football coach Tim Brewster appears to be tightening up recruiting areas they used to raid. Don't be surprised if the Gophers football team has as many as seven newcomers starting on defense next season.

Their recruiting class was ranked 23rd, so they those schools should be concerned. Now Brewster has to prove he can coach.

If he can coach them Minnesota will be a team to deal with in a couple of seasons. Not this year, though. Too young.

One survey I saw had the Gophers ranked in the top 15. Pretty amazing considering they haven't been a power player in the Big Ten for a long, long time and theyonly won one game last season. Hopefully this class will pan out as I think everybody except OSU and Michigan fans are really tired of their starnglehold on the Big Ten. Hey if Kansas can contend for he Big 12 and Rutgers fand South Florida for the for the Big East and Wake Forest for the ACC there is no reason Minnesota can't jump into the Big Ten mix.

i think a little more respect has to get sent towards minnesota, finally getting a new stadium and a coach that has some recruiting ability... we will see i guess...

Recruiting class rank means nothing.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that recruiting class rank "means nothing."

It isn't the be-all, end-all of college football, but it is important.

Recruiting class rank means slightly more than nothing. It means you have a set standard you should be able to maintain. If you bring in top 20 recruiting classes each year, but barely make a Bowl game it is likely a sign you can't coach. If you constantly bring in a recruiting class outside the top 25, and keep managing 10 win seasons it likely means you are doing something right as a coach.

Recruting class rank doesn't mean much, but it is a guage that fans, the media and administrators look at to determine the direction a program is going. As a coach you would much rather not get credit for great recruting and keep winning games than be a great recruiter on a average team.

Really? Recruiting means slightly more than nothing? Very interesting.

I wonder if Pete Carroll thinks recruiting means 'slightly more than nothing.'

If what you say were true, than coaches wouldn't waste time on recruiting. They would just let whomever wants to go to their school come in and walk on and be done with it.

Recruiting means a GREAT DEAL more than "slightly more than nothing," my friend.

Its impressive how he's recruiting - Minnesota doesn't ahve a large population, his team had a miserable year, so he has been cleaning up at the Junior Colleges.

Six national titles looking for seven. You go Brewster.

Damn. Minnesota is usually a given W. I hear that if he doesn't do well this coming season he and his staff are gone no matter what the recruiting class is like.
