Surprise suitor in McCann sweepstakes

07:32 AM ET 10.25 | A dark-horse candidate for Brian McCann's services ? If someone was to guess which team might be the least likely to land [McCann], the Giants might quickly come to mind. After all, they already have the game's best-hitting catcher in Buster Posey. And even if they didn't have Posey, an American League team seems to be a more natural fit for a good-hitting catcher due to the DH. However, it appears the Giants might at least consider looking at McCann. They are said to have interest in a left-handed power bat, and the market is extremely thin there. A person with Giants connections said that, ultimately, it may depend on how much playing time McCann seeks. He hit 20 home runs with 57 RBI and a .256 batting average this past year, the seventh time in eight seasons he hit 20 home runs.

They're going to pay that kind of money for a backup for Posey?
They want to see how much playing time McCann wants? He wants to START, moron, I guarantee it!
And there's already talk about how both of these guys are probably going to change positions before too long, so the Giants will have 2 guys to play first instead of 2 guys to catch.
What an idiotic story.

If he signs with the Giants his home run production will probably drop in half playing half of the season in SF and maybe management has forgot what they really need, is players that can play everyday and can hit for average and drive in runs.

Yankee Stadium is the perfect landing spot for a catcher with a left handed power bat.

No kidding. McCann's looking for big money. He's not signing on the split time with Posey.

But the Yankees have to pat Cano and want to change their luxury tax rate. I can see Boston going after him and getting rid of Salty.

There are way too many sports writers. The need to say something different leads to silly articles like this one. We need a contraction of sports media.

Personally I would take Yadier over Posey, but I don't have a problem with others put him #1. He's right up here as far as I'm concerned. Is Mauer included in those numbers? Does he still play most of his games at Catcher?

this would be a masterpiece deal, a coup. Not that McCann is a superstar or anything like that, get Posey out from behind the plate and extend his on field career. Put him at 1st, or maybe 3rd? Just get him out of the monkey suit.

The problem with moving Posey is the same as the problem moving Mauer and Martinez. Their bats aren't as much of an advantage when you move them to positions already expected to provide power and offense. Their extremely high value comes from the fact that their offense is coming from a position which is primarily a defensive position.

This would be my guess as well. The Yankees are in desperate need of a catcher.

On the Giants, anyone who can hit even a little should be protected.
