09:18 AM ET 10.26 | Kobe Bryant isn't going anywhere. Los Angeles Lakers executive vice president of basketball operations Jim Buss said Friday that the team has started talks with Bryant's representative on a contract extension for the five-time NBA champion and fully expects a new deal to be completed before the star guard can become a free agent July 1.

The Lakers would be better off to spend money on younger talent than pay a veteran rehabbing from an achilles injury.

yah and DJ kept trying to say this guy would be retired soon. lol

I think they need to hold off and see how he looks still and then go from there.

Maybe he would agree to a trade to a contending team. This would be a win, win, for the Lakers if they could pull this off.

QUOTE(#4):

12 million per year would be good but he's worth more based on what he brings in financially. The problem is that the more you give him the less you have to build around him.

Bogut just got 3 years and 43 million.

Kobe will probably get 2 years and 30-32 million.

Wait till he comes back and he sees himself perform. He may not want to ruin his legacy and may opt to retire when he sees he isn't the same as before the injury. Kobe's a fan of history and won't want to taint that.

I don't get DJ's logic about it. I've tried to ask him his reasoning but he won't explain.

I too thought that Kobe would retire soon. Rather than be retired when he's too far over the hill.

But if I were in a situation where people offered me money to stick around, I would...

Some people on here act like he'll be playing when he's 40 like MJ. That won't happen. If he signs a 2 or 3 year deal, I doubt he finishes it.

I would let him walk and see where he can go. Kobe doesn't wanna play anywhere else, so LA is just competing with itself. Yes Kobe is a great, but if his contract is any more than $8-10M per, they cannot afford a star player that they badly need.

Let him walk!! Let the market determine his price.

Sorry Jack. It's all about Kobe until he retires. Kobe has got all the Lakers' management and fans by the balls. If they were smart they would wait until summer to see what other superstar they can add to their team. It's time for Kobe to be unselfish and let management add a superstar to help him.
