Moulson not long for Buffalo

07:27 AM ET 10.28 | This, Buffalo, is what a rebuild looks like. The Sabres shipped [Thomas Vanek] to the New York Islanders for accomplished scorer Matt Moulson, a first-round pick in the 2014 NHL draft and a second-round selection in 2015. It's a blockbuster swap that would generate headlines at the frantic trade deadline, and it's even more significant this early in the season. ... Moulson, like Vanek, is in the final year of his contract. He is expected to arrive in town for [Monday night's] game against Lindy Ruff and the Dallas Stars, but it's very possible he won't stay long. Pending unrestricted free agents are prime targets to move at the trade deadline, and Moulson is a three-time, 30-goal scorer who should attract interest and bring a substantial return.

Moulson has outscored Vanek the past two seasons, and somehow Vanek's worth a first AND a second more than Moulson?

Yeah - I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this deal yet. I loved Matty Mo and most Isles fans would probably say the same. He was a soldier to say the least. I know the chemistry he had with JT was fantastic, so I'm curious to see what he can do without a player like JT centering him.

I think Vanek is a much more skilled player. Faster, stronger and bigger. With both pending FA, this deal only works for the Isles if they can resign him. On the flip side, they could trade Vanek if they are out of playoff contention and get that 1st rounder back. I guess this is one of those 'time will tell' type trades.

It's a curious move to shake them up, but they really needed help on DEF and G.

Interesting deal. Wonder with this deal done/made, if the rumors still persist regarding Miller. Do they still shop him/does he still look?

My only thought is that maybe they look around and see so many goalies who might be available and figure they won't have to expend something as valuable as a first to get one. They're gonna have to do a lot of convincing of Vanek to keep him from going to Minnesota, though. I think Moulson would've gladly re-signed. And now Buffalo will probably flip him and Miller for firsts and will end up with four damn picks in June.

I dont know how easily Moulson would have resigned. He was undervalued on his last contract, got a mild-payday and performed. After this year, he's getting his payday. He's a proven goal scorer, so I think the Isles may have had a little trouble resigning him.

That's not the first time I've heard the Minn/Vanek thing - why is that?

I don't understand this trade at all, mainly for a lot of what you've said...and what Danny said also....

I will be more than a little shocked if Miller is wearing a Sabres sweater come season's end

Went to high school there, BFF's with Pominville, Minny's got Heatley's all star contract coming off the books in July so the space is there, Minny's in win now mode. Lots of pieces that fit.

Ahhh - well, Isles have about 70 plus games to convince him. Fortunately Grabner is friend with Vanek.

I thought Burkie went to Calgary.

One thing I really like about this trade is the timing of it. If the Isles would have been competing for Vanek with other teams, it would probably have driven the price higher.

Now....about that Goalie position.....

yeah but hopefully they can hang onto him.

Sabres are stock piling picks. I think they have two firsts and two seconds 2014, and two firsts and three seconds for 2015.....

Looking forward to Tuesdays matchup against the Rags now. Should be a good one. We need a few fights and something crazy to happen to restore the rivalry a bit.
