Wolverines' toughness on trial

07:25 AM ET 10.29 | For all the positives Brady Hoke brings to Ann Arbor, in the eyes of some, the honeymoon reached a critical stage this week. Hoke's done well telling the Blue hairs what they've desired hearing since his arrival almost three years ago. But it can't sit well with the diehard traditionalists that he doesn't know if his team can be physical enough to hang with Michigan State this weekend in East Lansing. They admittedly got bullied two years ago. ... [Hoke] knows Michigan State will try once again to punch his players in the mouth. They'll occasionally step across that arbitrary line separating maniacal from mayhem. And Hoke also knows there comes a moment when the only response to a bully is out-bullying him. He just doesn't know for sure if his team is up to that task if physically challenged.

Yeah, to see who is the actual best of the B10 this year comes down to this game.

October 29, 2013  09:10 AM ET

Michigan has to play there best game of the year to win. Spartans defense is best in the B1G and one of the best in the nation.

Spartans favored by 4.5 and should win by a TD or more.

However, if somehow Gardner can figure out a way not to turn the ball over against that "D", Michigan will be in it most of the game.

Also, if MSU's QB (Cook) has a good game, it's Sparty's game for sure.

Fantasy / Speculative comment . . . put Gardner on Sparty and they beat OSU in the B1G Championship game. Sparty's lack of production from the QB position this year has been their Achilles Heel.

Michigan State is quietly having a really good year.

October 29, 2013  09:23 AM ET

Hoke signed a 6-year contract. It's year 3.

In 2014, essentially the whole roster will be his recruits. There better be clear signs of significant improvement next year (2014) even though the schedule is not as favorable as with road games at ND, at MSU, and at OSU.

2015 is the "drop dead" year in my mind. The schedule that year is much more favorable and expectations will be very high.

True, but he will still have Gardner and... still not doing his preferred offense. Are you guys at MSU two years in a row?

Its easy to get bullied when you OL is a bunch of 275 lb lineman from the RR era. I find it funny the article makes no mention to last year????? But I agree Hoke needs to bet his 300 lb lineman moving the def. line. As big as they are they need to work better as a unit.
