USC recruiting in uncertain times

07:26 AM ET 10.29 | It wasn't all that long ago that Ed Orgeron found himself hovering over Southern California in a helicopter. It was a Friday night, and Orgeron was less than two weeks into his new role as USC's interim coach. Before Lane Kiffin was fired on Sept. 29, many of the top high school players in the Southland had been up in the air about playing for the Trojans. Now, Orgeron was literally circling above them as part of a mission to reboot local recruiting. Orgeron is striving to become USC's full-time head coach. But that has not been his pitch to prospects and their parents. "Whoever the head coach is, they are going to hire the best guy for the job," Orgeron said. ... "So I tell them, 'You're going to get a great guy here, and you're going to love 'SC and the education you can get here.'"

I doubt Orgeron will be the permanent HC but since he is such a good recruiter, good chance he will stay.

Will they be much for the next 3 to 10 years is the question. The Vols will rise before they will.

LMFAO!!!!! Damn, that is the funniest thing I have heard for quite a while!!! Good job Colonel.

to their benefit, they don't need to go outside their back yard to recruit, so if they make the right hire it shouldn't set them back far...

Very challenging position to be in, trying to convince kids to commit to a program in transition.
They have until February 1st, so it can get done if they name the next HC in December.

Bet they hire someone that already has recruiting connections in place.

You could say the same stuff about a lot of major college programs. You think kids in Texas think Jones will be there the next four years? And on and on and on....

Good point and really USC isn't all that bad this year. They have been down the last 2/3 years, but they will bounce back with the right HC. The PAC is going to only get better in the years to come and USC will be right near the top in a couple of years.

The name Brown uses when he signs at the hotel register in Texas towns so they do not confuse him with that other guy he looks sorta like.

You know, " Meeeee, and Mrs. Jones...."

Yeah it was. LOL. Ed and probably Tee Martin will stay. We hire the right guy, and finish with a Top 10 class.

of course one recruiting tool you can use is just to flat out tell a kid, " We don't know who will be your coach but you can bet he'll be better than Kiffin"....

October 29, 2013  11:15 AM ET

He forgot to add immediate playing time.

Or just tell him "It WON'T be Kiffin."

That Colonel is a FUNNY guy - eh OT??? heh heh 8-)

I'd like to see Orgeron stay. The players like and respect him but as a HC I'm not sure he's there yet.

But we have a lot of work cut out for the team.

If you didn't watch the Rams, you missed a good one except for some really crappy play calling at the end.

I under stand Greg Shirano will be looking for a job soon. He did a good job at rutgers?
