Sabres were open to making Vanek NHL's top-paid guy

07:29 AM ET 10.29 | Was the move to trade Thomas Vanek partly the player's choice? [Vanek] could have been paid handsomely to stay in Buffalo. A source, in fact, says the Sabres were willing to make him the highest-paid player in the NHL. He'd rather win than take part in a rebuild, which has been his message since last season. "I enjoyed my time there, but I didn't want to be a part of that," Vanek told reporters in New York today following his first practice with the Islanders. "We traded pretty much every veteran. The message was clear that they're going for draft picks. I think our last game we played four teenagers. Good, young players, but young players take time." ... He watched Mike Grier inconsolably weep following his last NHL game, and Vanek would like to do what Grier didn't -- win the Stanley Cup.

Thanks for making this trade, Buffalo.

Now... is it possible the Canadians might consider trading Subban before tonight.

Of course he scored two goals in his first game. This crap only happens to the Isles......

Vanek will probably get hurt or something and Moulson will pot another 30 goals this year.....awesome.

Guess the Wings and beer arent enough to get guys to stay

The other concern should be throwing away a couple of early round picks...makes no sense.

Thanks to Kevin Lowe, Thomas Weenyk was already been handsomely/grossly overpaid over the last 5 years.

Kevin Lowe's still the only person who's made Burke sound like a reasonable, rational man.

Kevin Lowe's biggest accomplishment as a GM? He managed to "steal" Dustin Penner from Burke. 'nugh said!

I wish. It was 7 years.

As a Sabres fan, thank God they didn't sign him to some crazy deal. He'll be much better on a team where he's not THE guy. He just is not a natural leader. He'll be great on the Wild, where that role is already filled.

Isles have the option to defer that to 2015 if it's a top 10 pick for the 1st rounder. Plus Buffalo ate some money on this deal. A very strange deal as the news unfolds.

Obviously the Holiday Inn Express was booked.

If that's true, the Sabres truly haven't learned a thing over the past few years.

Agreed.

Nothing has changed.....and they lost a coach.....pardon me fired a coach that didnt need firing.

It's pretty good that Moulson seemed to rise to the challenge, and Vanek has been a pretty consistent player for a team that made it difficult. T.O had that issue with Kessel, and now those post hits are going in, and man he is playing great. I love this team the way its looking. And pray that it keeps up......we are due to feel good!
