Jets never had great expectations for Smith

07:14 AM ET 10.30 | To borrow a phrase from a former NFL head coach, Geno Smith is what the New York Jets thought he was. Taken in the second round of this past April's NFL Draft, the Jets knew that Smith was very much a work in progress, so says former Jets scout Joe Bommarito. But he also may not have been drafted to be the answer or the franchise quarterback. Bommarito was in the meetings leading up to the NFL Draft along with other scouts and general manager John Idzik when they discussed drafting Smith. "The consensus was that he can be a decent quarterback, we're not looking at a superstar here," Bommarito told NJ.com. "He can be a good quarterback -- a solid one." That might be the ceiling for Smith if the early returns are any indication.

"He's better than Tebow" is really not the best way to decide on a draft choice.

If THAT's the measuring stick that is really setting the bar low.

They knew he could easily beat out Sanchez though.

That's the way to motivate a player, huh? Have your scouts tell the media how how their opinion of him was?

I f they didn't have no great expectations for Geno Smith then why did they draft him to be there QB, Just another reason the Jets Suck.

October 30, 2013  08:13 AM ET

I don't think anyone had great expectations for Smith or the Jets.

Jets win, Geno is stepping up and establishing himself as a superstar. Jets lose, everyone says they knew all along that he wasn't that good. Welcome to the disjunction of the New York/New Jersey media.

"we're not looking at a superstar here"

Any casual fan could have provided that scouting report.

He has, however, made us mostly forget about Mark Sanchez.

That's something most of us were pre-disposed to doing anyway, but let's give Geno some credit where credit is due.

October 30, 2013  08:47 AM ET

Didn't think he would do as well as he has! Time is on his side!

"Jets never had great expectations for Smith"

That's wise, considering he's a thug.

October 30, 2013  09:19 AM ET

Way to shake his confidence. This guy came in telling everyone he was a savior.

We'll always have the Buttfumble.

Good article. Worth the read. You can win someday with a Smith IF he improves and learns and does snot do stupid stuff. That is about it for most QBs you draft and all you can hope for.

Ya think the Patriots thought Brady was any long term answer when they let 198 guys get drafted before they take him?

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."

I know, right author, wrong book but it semed fitting.

Ah yes, I remember it well. Sanchez wore green, the Patriots wore red, white, and blue...
