D'Antoni compared Kobe to Secretariat

07:19 AM ET 10.30 | Kobe Bryant has heard all manner of comparisons to the NBA greats throughout his career, from Michael Jordan to Elgin Baylor, but Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni had something else in mind. "Kobe is a unique individual and he is very headstrong," D'Antoni told "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" on ESPN Radio. "And one of the reasons why he's been the best in the game, and will be and is, is that he is that way. You are definitely not handling him. ... So it's a challenge at the same time. It's probably like riding Secretariat. I mean, you get up there, there's a lot of times all you are doing is riding. He's carrying you. And Kobe's carrying us a lot. Obviously you would like certain things to soften up, but you can't take away his spirit."

Well.....the Lakers didn't need Kobe's 'giddy-up' last night......

Very surprising win!

The Lakers Will Always Own LA, Bros.

The new Lakers is proving me right so far. Players are more aggressive and confident. There's more trust in each other. Kobe needs to be back right away for my sake...

Not surprised by this game. The Clippers look like the same team they were the last two years. The Lakers will be better than most people expect and the Clippers will be worse than most people expect.

"D'Antoni compared Kobe to Secretariat"...

Doesn't everyone? I mean everyone on FN has been condemning him to the Glue Factory for the past couple seasons...

Really? After 1 game?

Only because of the outcome. On the Lakers first loss he'll revert back to his "Lakers suck" song.

This cat will never admit being wrong, he swings at both fences. A legend in his own mind.

Yes after 1 game. Actually I've been seeing how they play through the regular season and these Lakers are aggressive and play well together.

Guam - Good Morning my friend... I just have to say you need to come out the closet once and for all and proclaim your love for the L A K E R S....... :-)

It's obvious you talk more in-depth about them than your purported love for the Mav's....

Lastly - We all know that's Kobe's fault too...!!!

Yeah. I woke up today and I'm like how the hell did Lakers beat Clippers. But yes there's something to be said for Kobe's absence and the team success that comes with it. Problem is you need Kobe in the playoffs and who knows if Mike D can maintain that coaching energy.

Good win for Lakers. I wish them and all other 29 teams the best of luck and health this season. I'm glad the NBA is back.

LOL - Mike D'Antoni said the same thing to the media in NYC during the midst of Linsanity before Melo came back from "injury"and put the kibbosh on that noise...

Crazy game last night. Never expected that.

Nah! I just know the game but you've just gave some immunition for the fanatics to come out...

But I must say I want Kobe back by next week. It won't be looking good for me if he continues to be out. That scapegoat Pau will continue to play better w/out Kobe. I hate that! Those other players will look fearless w/out Kobe. I want Kobe back to put fear in these scrub Lakers players.
