07:31 AM ET 10.30 | As the season rolls along, the question becomes more pertinent: Can the Maple Leafs afford to pay Dion Phaneuf $7 million per season? Can they afford not to? While the two sides have "kicked tires," according to a source familiar with the process -- in other words, agreed to talk down the road -- no formal discussions have taken place as of yet. "Don't read too much into it ... yet," the source said. Phaneuf, 29, has a cap hit of $6.5 million this season. According to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos, he reported hearing the bar has been set at seven years for a total of $50 million. Asked about negotiations, Phaneuf remained elusive -- just like he usually is on the topic. "I'm leaving that to my representatives at Newport Sports," Phaneuf said on Tuesday.

Sure, they can give him $7 million a season. But then they'll be shedding everybody else on the team and not signing anybody new, and with 13 guys coming off the books next summer that shouldn't be a problem at all!

Give him $10 per for 20 years. I really like Mrs. Pinch......right where she is.

Anyway, on to things that are much more ridiculous - 1/4th of last night's Kessel show

Looks like W2 played goal again. :-(

Don't worry. It's a West Coast swing. They're legally obligated to lose 2/3 so expect HC to be happy tonight.

Saturday's gonna be rough, though.

I don't know Danny. I don't think the Oil even softened them up for the Flames. Giordano and Stempniak are out. But they do still have "The O'Brien".

I'll give him this much - he's doing pretty alright in his UFA year. Just gotta pray Nonis doesn't have the Burke goggles on.

Unfortunately, the Leafs can't play Edmonton every night.

Big reunion tonight. Do you think the phrase "Na Na Nana Na Na Naa Naaaa" will be uttered?

They already ran a story about this, and sadly Burke is out of town and won't be attending tonight.

Hey, that Jameson's isn't gonna make it's way from Cork to Calgary on its own!

So all this 'Northern Gateway Pipeline' fuss isn't bout oil?

Absolutely! The Leafs will have all kinds of cap space next summer. Give him the $ 7mill and throw in some bonuses that can get it up to $10 mill.

What would you sign him to? Slippery slope this one.

The Leafs aren't going to look the same at all next season. That's when we're really going to see what Nonis is made of.

I'm betting on pudding. :-)

The last guy was made of Bailey's, so I guess that's an upgrade?

He will sign a huge deal based off of this years FA performance and then promptly disintegrate.
