07:39 AM ET 10.31 | The Carl Pelini era is now over at Florida Atlantic. [Pelini's] resignation Wednesday in the wake of what athletics director Pat Chun described as "illegal drug use" leaves the university the ability to collect $500,000 in damages from Pelini, according to his contract terms and athletics department spokeswoman Katrina McCormack. "The university does have that option," McCormack said Wednesday night in response to an inquiry from USA TODAY Sports. "It has been put in the hands of the university's legal department. ... This has been such a whirlwind and our first priority is to take care of the kids (on the team). But as this starts to fall into place, that is an option." Chun said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis "tendered their resignations to me."

The $500k would help defray some of the headhunter cost, so I say hit him for it.
