Bizarre goaltending twist for Carolina

07:37 AM ET 11.01 | For now, the Hurricanes are left with Justin Peters to man the pipes -- this after losing Cam Ward and Anton Khudobin to injuries in the space of 10 days. In desperation, the Hurricanes offered Rick DiPietro an AHL tryout, and goalie coach Greg Stefan was in Grand Rapids, Mich., to watch his debut Wednesday. One word could suffice for Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller's summary of Stefan's appraisal: Rusty. If DiPietro can help, it won't be soon. There are precious few teams that could survive losing both their No. 1 and No. 2 goaltenders, and the Hurricanes aren't one of them. ... They continue to fall behind early, as they did before Ward was injured, but they have lost the confidence in their goaltending that allowed them to recover in those games.

DiPietro rusty -- that's new, I'm used to reading hurt. Good ol' Rickiety.

So how's the draft lookin this year?

Drafting a goalie (in early rounds) makes about as much sense as paying one $6-7m per.

Glad to see he found a team that would sign him, but he'll never be anything more than a desparation move for any GM.

Justin Peters? Must be the really small ones.

In his prime I would have said he was a top 10 goalie, maybe just out of the top 5, but Garth must have seen something really special and signed him to that enormous deal. I don't think Rick could play up to the hype and expectations.

As soon as the rust comes off and he's ready to face some real NHL firepower, that's when he gets mysteriously hurt.
