Some want Sampson to stay

The consensus is that Indiana president Michael McRobbie, a first-year president who did not hire Kelvin Sampson, already has his answer and expects the university's athletic director, Rick Greenspan, to provide the formula that produces the desired result: termination. Let me make the case for Sampson to remain at Indiana. One more chance. He has clearly blundered -- maybe twice. Once at Oklahoma and now, according to an NCAA report, at Indiana, which hired him in 2006. In pursuit of players, Sampson cannot seem to keep his fingers off speed dial. But if McRobbie hasn't made up his mind, he should step back, tap into a significant, mostly silent, number of faculty members and Indiana supporters who would like to see Sampson remain as the coach. One of them is John A. McCluskey Jr., a professor of Afro-American studies at Indiana and an adjunct professor of English. "What I would like to see happen is that he stay on, he gets censured one more time, but he's on that short leash again," McCluskey said Sunday from Bloomington. "It's a divided campus here. I think the majority would want him to stay, particularly after last night."

Finally someone backs him up
He's a good coach regardless of calling recruits when he wasnt supposed to, and Indiana would have a hard time filling the shoes of Coach Sampson.
He deserves another chance.

This IS his second chance! This is the same stuff that made him run away from Oklahoma. How many chanced does he get?

Sincerely,
Steve Howe

If this were a student-athlete caught cheating red-handed on an exam, he'd be out. If this were a student-athlete caught red-handed with an illegal substance, he'd be out. Even a student-athlete who had blatantly violated team rules for a second time would be out. Sampson should walk away by resigning before Greenspan and McRobbie do the right thing by firing him.

GradManOSU- i Have to admit I was on the fence a little bit about giving him a second chance but I think you may have hit it on the head. Most non-student athletes would not have been given a third chance and I don't think he should either.

February 18, 2008  08:18 AM ET

If they don't fire him, it'd send the wrong message. They want him to stay because he brought back the program to Big Ten and NC contention, but as a university, you got to do the right thing. No student would have all these chances.

McCluskey is living in a dream world. Fire Sampson and Greenspan then hire Bob Knight as AD. That will unite the Hoosier Nation.

February 18, 2008  08:46 AM ET

Indiana gets what it deserves. They didnt appreciate Mike Davis and tolerated Bob Knights abusive and bullying. So like Knight, Sampson should be under a zero tolerance policy, after all choking a kid is just as worse as making extra phone calls, right?

February 18, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Part of the reason for firing Sampson would be to mitigate the punishment handed down by the NCAA. There are FIVE major violations on the table, remember? If they keep him, that will be all the more reason for the NCAA to hand out the stiffest sentence possible.

IU want be happy and united until they hired their missing white head coach and have three white starters and only 2 players of color starting and on the team.

February 18, 2008  10:29 AM ET

If Sampson were white, would the Afro-American prof be willing to offer him a second chance for at least the second time?

February 18, 2008  10:56 AM ET

I'm afraid you might be right, Dawg.

This thing is not about skin color, it's about wins.

My wife made an interesting point the other day. It seems strange for them to be so ready to terminate him based on breaking RULES, when not that long ago they kept a coach forever who broke LAWS. I'm looking at you Bobby Knight.

isn't all pretty harsh for making phone calls? there's still a chance that he didn't do it ... how quick the sportsnation is to adjudge an accused guilty. if Sampson resigns, he's 'admitting' guilt. let it play out, people. the truth is out there.

What a great example for the young kids to see
Stike one, Strike Two the same thing - He should be gone and banned for life.
When will we start to protect the games
Cheaters should be gone
He knew the rules
Cheaters should be gone

As a student at IU, I can assure you that many of the students are sympathetic towards Sampson. All of the players speak very highly of Sampson and many view him as family, but it will be difficult for him to keep his job given the media outcry. From a basketball standpoint, IU will be no better off in the future by firing Sampson.
