08:16 AM ET 11.02 | It took six goals, mocking chants on home ice and a fiery intermission speech from Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. With 14:29 remaining in the third period, the Flyers finally reached their boiling point. Wayne Simmonds dropped the gloves with Tom Wilson, and Flyers backup Ray Emery immediately knew where he was heading. Emery left the crease and flew down the ice to take on Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby, who wanted nothing to do with the fisticuffs. "He didn't want to fight," Emery said. "I basically said, 'Protect yourself.' He didn't really have much of a choice." The Capitals' bench was incensed with Holtby, pitching a shutout no less, being forced into fighting Emery. By the time Holtby was finally able to pick his head up, after being pounded in the corner by Emery against his will, his forehead was swollen and covered in welts. The Wells Fargo Center crowd was on its feet for the first time.

Jail?

Emery though Holtby's hiding some white powder in his pants so, he mugged him.

Loser move by a loser goalie. I was 100% behind him last year when he played so well, but this was BS.

Likewise, I was not impressed by Holtby's teammates who all pulled a Buffalo and allowed Emery to turn him into a pinata.

He sounds like a complete, total jerk...........Suspend his sorry arse the rest of the year.......Without pay......

Fighting Emery? Looked to me like Holtby volunteered himself as a punching bag for Floyd Mayweather. But then ... Mayweather would show a lot more class that this thug.

Typical Flyer philosophy. If you can't win the game then win the fight and the Flyers sure aren't winning many games this year.

The question begs though, what exactly did Holtby do that so enraged Emery? Make a couple saves maybe?

I was the first to applaud Emery for finding his way back to the NHL but, after this, it's clear the dude has some serious emotional issues. Going after a guy who can't fight? And, beating the crap out of him when he's down? He's a two bit thug.

absolutely disgusting. There should be criminal charges filed, not just a suspension

November 2, 2013  10:03 AM ET

That is about what you would expect from the Flyers when they are getting their butts kicked. This is an organization still steeped in its Broad Street Bullies days, thanks to owner Ed Snider. And since many of their fans seem more excited about fights than goals, the ones who were still there were rewarded with something to be excited about. Only surprising thing was that a Flyers' fan didn't jump over the boards to help Emery pound Holtby. They usually prefer the two-on-one scenario.

Saw the fight and agree, loser goalie. I just said yesterday how I was for him, but when another player says no to the fight, that' it. Emery will get a few games I'm thinking.

This is the wake up call that the Flyers need. Yeah it was bush league, but it is the kind of fire that need and have lacked all year.

the NHL is on notice, they will not go down easily from here on out

Personally Emery & the Flyers are just poor arse sports. Look at Claude Gorilla, he stinks. Not worth what he makes. Flyers need serious help. Emery probably wanted to fight so he could say he actually won since he & his team were getting their arse's kicked LOL

Lmao really? The kind of fire where their goalie looks like a donkey and they lose two players to injury? They won't go down easily. They won't go down at all because they are already as low as they can possibly get.

LOL, Gonna need a shovel to get any lower.
