10:33 AM ET 11.03 | Joe Nathan made his final save for the Rangers on Friday. It came to about $750,000 worth of savings. With depth in the bullpen and finite financial resources to finish out a roster full of offensive holes, the Rangers need every available dollar to use on free agency and trades. Because of that, they were willing to walk away from Nathan and turn the closer's job over to somebody already under contract for 2014 -- though they still aren't sure who that will be. If the Rangers had declined the option, they still would have been bound to a $750,000 buyout. "We feel our bullpen is one of our strengths, an area of depth," Daniels added. "We expect our closer to be someone who is already in the organization. We probably won't name one until spring training to see how things play out, but we've got some options." Those options: Former All-Star closers Neftali Feliz and Joakim Soria, both of whom underwent Tommy John surgery in 2012, and 2013 setup man Tanner Scheppers. Alexi Ogando could also figure in the mix, though Daniels said he expects Ogando will be a starter in 2014. Knowing that Nathan wants a multi-year deal, however, the Rangers were able to exercise the option and have Nathan decline it. It takes them off the hook for the buyout.

It's just one more step in their fade back into the pack in the AL. Their window has officially closed.

That began when they started phasing out Nolan.

Pretty sleezy treatment to one of the best closers in the game... What is it with Texas?? First the Cowboys and now the Rangers...
