New Kidd-to-Dallas deal finalized

For the second time in less than a week, the Mavericks are on the verge of bringing Nets point guard Jason Kidd back to Dallas. This time, the deal appears to be free of sticking points. The Mavericks will trade five players, two first-round draft picks and $3 million to the Nets for Kidd. An NBA executive confirmed before Sunday's All-Star Game that the deal had been finalized and probably will be submitted to the league office today for formal approval. The swap will send Devin Harris, DeSagana Diop, Trenton Hassell, Moe Ager and Keith Van Horn, who has not played since 2005-06, to the Nets for Kidd, Malik Allen and possibly Antoine Wright. The Mavericks also will lose first-round draft picks this summer and in 2010, along with the cash payment, the maximum allowed by the league.

Bad move both teams.

I have lost a lot of respect for Kidd, but it'll be interesting to see how this plays out in Dallas.

February 18, 2008  04:23 AM ET

I think the Mavs are giving up far more than they're getting in return. It looks like the supreme powers are all gearing up for a battle royale come playoff time. We'll see how long the Spurs stand pat after this flurry of movement. I expect them to make no changes and get knocked out in the second round this season.

So, whom will the Mavs aquirre as second Center as replacement for Diop?
They give a lot away, maybe too much. Even since the Nets wanted Kidd getting away from NJ.

welcome to the west..this years playoffs should be one for the ages..imagine seeing a 50 win team not making the playoffs, wow thats how stacked it is

So basically this trade is Harris for Kidd ? I looked up the stats on some of the other players they suck !!! I guess the bottom line with all the players involved is salary cap. I guess nowaday you really don't need a GM for trades as much as you need a accountant making the moves. Anyways - short term - I think Kidd will help the Mavs .

Congratulations Dirk! You now get to guard Duncan, Stoudamire, Gasol, Boozer and Shaq all by yourself!

KIDD!!! YOU CRIED!! YOU BUILT YOUR BRIDGE.. now instead of getting over it, jump off it you sorry overpaid wife beating loser... mavericks are idiots for getting this washed up piece of crappppp

u have 2 be kkidding right. "Washed UP" he has 12 triple doubles at all-star break. hes the reason the nets are even in the playoffs. Now that Kidds gone the Nets are at best a lottery pick team so JKidd is the farthest thing to being WASHED UP

February 18, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Mavs gave up their future to win now. The probalem is, I don't think they got enough to win in the west yet... Plus, Stack and Kidd arent getting younger. Look for a similar trade in a year or two when Dirk gets traded to a up and coming team in the east since Mavs will be trying to rebuild and restock on youth.

February 18, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Well, I guess I'm happy just for the change. I have voiced my opinion many times that I didn't like this deal for the Mavs but it was obvious that they were determined to make it go through. All I can really hope for now is that Kidd will have at least 3 good years in him and that SOMEHOW Dallas manages to find a way to get another big man to help out Damp. I just don't think they have the right bodies in place to play against the likes of Duncan and Shaq. It seems the Suns and Mavs changed places. Suns have to slow down their game for Shaq and now the Mavs will need to speed theirs up without Diop and to take better advantage of Kidd. Just my 2 cents. All in all it should be an interesting playoff year. I HOPE that Kidd gets in there and everything clicks.

February 18, 2008  09:21 AM ET

The term "mortgaging your future" aptly applies here...The Lakers got a steal, Phoenix gave up equal value, but I think Dallas gave up too much...Harris is only 24 and was developing into a premiere point guard...Diop is a qualtiy and serviceable back-up especially when your starting center is Eric Dampier..As much as J.Kidd wanted out of New Jersey, you would think dallas would have found a way to get him a little cheaper...

February 18, 2008  09:22 AM ET

this is a dumb **** trade! the nets are definitely getting the better of it. no question about that. the mavs are really stupid for giving up what they did for kidd, who close to calling it quits. they had nash if they wanted to keep a solid veteran point guard, u give him up and then u give up ur future for a guy whos only gonna play like 3 more yrs.....

February 18, 2008  09:23 AM ET

I laugh at the people who thought Dallas gave up too much. They gave up Devin Harris who is good but has not shown that he will ever be a star point guard in the league. Beyond Harris, they gave up an easily replaceable backup center, a retired player and some other players who dont particularly matter.

February 18, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Great deal for the Nets. They get rid of a guy who does not want to play for them. Drop his contract and the new one he is pushing for, get first round pics and can start over this summer with some cap money...If the Mavs win it all, it is good for both. I do not see it happening though..

February 18, 2008  09:38 AM ET

The Mavs wouldn't be in this position had they not let Nash go.

February 18, 2008  09:55 AM ET

jkidd, jhoward and dirk will make a nice run in the west and with kidd pushing the ball maybe they wont get run off the court by the warriors again im thinkin western conference finals at the least.
as of late though dirk has been playin like a girl so maybe he will kick it up a notch come playoff time

You guys that keep saying dallas gave up way to much are dumb. the only players given up where harris and diop.

hassell doesnt play, van horn isnt in the league, and moe ager is a contract running out to be out of the league because he doesnt play any D and he isnt that good offensively.

As for the draft picks who cares. We always have the last pick in the 1st round anyways and the mavs have never really even gotten anyone in the draft. Howard was the only one.

go to this website and look at who they have drafted.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/DAL/draft.html

kidd is an improvement over harris anyways. he can actually RUN a team and make others better. it will hurt losing diop but damp doesnt play as bad as you guys make him out to be.
