Snag in Cubs' manager search, Samardzija a goner

07:25 AM ET 11.05 | It seems that on the first weekday of the offseason, Chicago's manager search was put on pause. Their plan to ask formal permission to talk with bench coach Torey Lovullo was delayed because of the Red Sox's intent to enforce an agreement made two years ago that prevents any employees from leaving for the Cubs as part of the terms that brought President Theo Epstein to Chicago. ... A major league source confirmed the Diamondbacks have maintained interest in pitcher Jeff Samardzija. The Diamondbacks initially were interested in Samardzija before the July 31 trade deadline. The Cubs would have to replace Samardzija's 213 2/3 innings and 33 starts if they were to move him, but they could get multiple players in return. Samardzija, 28, is expected to receive a healthy raise from his $2.64 million salary.

I'm sure the Bosox are completely within their rights, but I feel bad for Lovullo...he's caught in the middle. I can still remember when Sparky Anderson swore Torey was going to be a superstar with the Tigers.
I can't for the life of me see how this story justifies calling Samardninja a goner, he's still developing and I think it would be very smart for the Cubbies to keep him...it's not unusual for pitchers to peak late (thinking Big Unit in particular here).

Why is Samardzija even in a trade discussion? He's affordable and reliable.

The biggest news in Wrigley next year is about their new scoreboard and in and around July Cub fans will be saying the same old thing (wait until next year).

Yah Mark, speaking of snags you messed up your fishnets while you were turning tricks in the parking lot at Mars' Cheese Castle last night. Not surprising seeing how many truckers were lined up for your Monday night special.

Four snags if you include picking Sveum over Sandburg.

Yes, because Sandberg would rather be with a team with a century of futility than the team he started with and has cut his managerial teeth with - good point.

Sandberg coached and managed in the Cubs system for several years before moving on to the Philly system. I 'd say he cut his managerial teeth with the Cubs.

Ryno wanted the job at the time Theo choose Sveum. He is lucky he didn't get the job with the Cubbied.

The only thing 'reliable' about Samardzija is his inconsistency. He's also about to get more expensive because he is arbitration eligible and has turned down contract extension offers.

Yah Mark, you didn't get the job down at the Superb Video Adult Superstore either, the boss thought you would never come out of the backroom to help customers...unless they came into the backroom for a special consultation, if you know what I mean.
