McCann 'fascinated' by the Red Sox

07:27 AM ET 11.06 | Jarrod Saltalamacchia may just come up against a familiar friendly foe this offseason. After being drafted in the first round in 2003, [Saltalamacchia's] path to the majors with the Atlanta Braves was obstructed by fellow blue-chip catcher Brian McCann. Now, in the ultimate irony, McCann could replace Saltalamacchia with the Red Sox. If the Sox elect to move on from Saltalamacchia behind the plate -- and it sure seems like the World Series champions are leaning in that direction -- they likely will make a push for McCann, who also became a free agent last weekend. Although McCann figures to draw interest from several teams, including the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers, his agent told the Herald that the 29-year-old is "fascinated" by the possibility of playing for the Sox.

....salty plans to go back to the rangers and then pull a napoli on his former team...mccann should resign with braves a few more years and then go to yankers at age 38 or so...

McCann was probably about an average hitter for a C in '12 and bounced back somewhat last season, but he's a long way from hitting .300 like he did a couple of times when he was young. He's a valuable player and I think his personality is a great match for the grind em out Bosox, but the fact that he's viewed as probably the premier FA this offseason tells you how weak that group is.

At least he will have a chance at a ring somewhere else because it will never happen in Atlanta.

Some team out there is going to over pay for a 30 year old catcher to be in 14.

November 6, 2013  09:10 AM ET

This is interesting because Salty was wondering why he and his agent haven't received an offer yet from the Red Sox. McCann may just be that reason.

So is Atlanta giving McCann any signs they're going to go with Evan Gattis?

Fascinated=Make me an offer, it's an open auction!

I like McCann and hope we can sign him. He's one of those players that always seems to get the big hit when it's needed.

What??? You don't think BJ Upton can lead them to the World Series?

McCann is fascinated with Boston. But the Yankees are also fascinated with McCann. If Mcann signs up with Boston he would be reunited for former team mate C David Ross, the same catcher tandem in Atl. a couple of years ago. His clutch hitting will fit right in with Boston

Ha! But why so young to the Bronx? Wait until he's 39.....

Definitely agree on the weak FA market this year. But McCann w/ that short right field porch (not to mention the one at the little league park in NY) would see a pretty sizable spike in hr production.

Still trying to figure out the upside to Salty. Can't hit and can't throw anyone out.
