Flames mandate may violate CBA

07:35 AM ET 11.06 | As it turns out, Flames general manager Jay Feaster's idea may not fly. The NHLPA says the Calgary Flames cannot mandate its players wear protective foot and ankle equipment commonly known as "shotblockers." [Feaster] instructed his players get fitted for the guards after Calgary captain Mark Giordano suffered a broken ankle and veteran forward Lee Stempniak broke his foot after being hit by pucks last month. Flames players have informed the Players Association they were strongly encouraged by Flames management to wear the shotblockers, but were told the equipment wasn't mandatory. However, Feaster says this is a mandatory team policy which may create a problem as such a policy could be viewed as a CBA violation. ... "No team can unilaterally make a piece of equipment mandatory," Mathieu Schneider, Special Assistant to NHLPA Executive Director Don Fehr, told the Dreger Report.

Goaltenders are mandatory, too - don't see either Alberta team playing with one of those.

2) Why would any of us care about this? Seriously?

Would you watch it if they called it the Double D Report?

The NHL surely lacks the hard-hitting issues the NFL faces.

But I am always intrigued by the disconnect that occurs between leagues, Players' Associations and what ultimately comes down to common sense.

If they make players safer, they should wear the guards, but the PA won't let teams require the players to wear them. But the teams, who pay the players, should have a say in how their assets are protected.

I guess that's unions everywhere - "You might be right, but you can't tell us what to do."

Somebody told Jay they were like sneeze-guards for your feet but being unfamiliar with salad they had to explain it to him.

If it weren't for collusion and the desire for a salary cap, there would be zero purpose for the PA.

Hell, half the time they're alienating their own constituents by doing dumb crap like appealing suspensions on Patrick Kaleta's behalf for trying to kill another constituent.

Placed on and cleared waivers. He's the AHLPA's problem now. :-)

The P.A. Union manifesto says on page 1 - We play in league governed by an idiot , and as such we reserve the right to act like idiots ourselves.
