Andrus an option for Cards

07:24 AM ET 11.08 | Yes, the Cardinals could use an upgrade at shortstop, and Troy Tulowitzki might seem to make for a nice fit in St. Louis. The more reasonable trade option, P-D colleague Joe Strauss argues, is Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus. He turns 26 next season, so he is just entering his athletic prime. He offers none of Tulowitzki's power, but he could add some speed and durability at the position -- at least until he gets into his 30s. His salary jumps to $6,475,000 next season, then up to $15 million in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. At that point he can opt out of the contract. If Andrus keeps playing well, he would almost certainly test the market. His agent, Scott Boras, structured the deal to give his client both security and flexibility.

I guess the Cards would trade some of their young power arms for Andrus?
This deal might make a lot of sense for both parties...I think Andrus would fit in well in the NL and would give the Cards a nice baserunning threat. Elvis is probably only a little bit above average for a hitter at SS, but play nice D and has a lot more stick than Kozma.

Joe you have been covering the Cards for years and why would you put out this ridiculous article that the Cards should trade for Elvis knowing the organization will not pay that much for a shortstop.

I think they would pay that much for a shortstop like Tulo. This particular shortstop is overpaid.

Thing is that $15million isn't a lot in baseball right now, Elvis doesn't start making that until '15, and it will look even smaller in '18.

I don't see the Cards wanting any part of that contract. Signing Drew would seem to be the way to go.
