More questions for ND in 2014

07:22 AM ET 11.11 | At this point, obviously, the Irish aren't a team headed back to the national title game, and, in some ways, it may unfortunately be time to look beyond 2013 in South Bend. The problem with looking ahead to 2014, though, is it brings with it far more uncertainty than the current incarnation, which could just as easily roll into a surprise season as it could one that looks progressively less like the 2012 run. The three biggest issues/questions that will ultimately sharpen that view are as follows. 1. Did Kelly do the right thing in going all-in with Tommy Rees as quarterback this season? ... 2. Will the defense continue backtracking next season to the point the offense will have to carry the load? ... 3. Will Kelly keep evolving as a coach?

Hasn't ND been getting some highly ranked recruiting classes the past two years? Those guys should fill any gaps...unless their staff evaluated recruits about like the rusty cow staff did back in 08-10.

"At this point, obviously, the Irish aren't a team headed back to the national title game,"

Ya think? Damn dude that "point" was reached in early Sept when a pathetic Meatchiken team beat them.

LOL. No kidding. There was no reason to even have that sentence in the "story".

I still don't understand how Sparty lost to the domers...even if their offense was struggling. As far as the BCS computer stuff goes, that loss seems to be hurting them more and more as the season progresses.

I don't like that cuz Sparty is one of my two favorite B1G teams.

Why DC, I didn't know you had ANY favorite B1G teams. Thought they all resided in the Lone Star State. ;)

Y'know, Pat Dooley at the Gville Sun made a crack about how each Gator loss keeps chipping away at the BCS prospects of FSU as a "silver lining" to our problems. I can tell you it IS possible to both laugh and cry at the same time.

Good point and I don't see how ND beat USC. I take that back, I forgot that LK was still the coach. :-)

Correction: I take that back, LK was fired before the ND game.

Kelly had little choice at QB; remember that the few plays Hendrix ran were not pretty.
Defense was a disappointment this year, clearly lacked a take-charge leader.
Kelly will evolve, a lot of freshman are getting playing time, the recruiting is going well, and Gholston will be a year older and, presumably, more mature.
ND will have a good year in 2014. ACC play will begin, interesting new opponents.
