07:21 AM ET 11.14 | Absent Panda? Third baseman Pablo Sandoval, preparing to enter the most important season of his career, has decided to stay in Venezuela this winter to get into shape rather than come to Arizona, where the team has year-round facilities and could keep an eye on him. That was the original plan. This is not the most desirable development for the Giants. When I asked head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner if he would have preferred Sandoval to come to Arizona, he said, "Of course. But he can do what he wants and stay out there. It's fine. I don't care where he's at as long as he's taking care of himself and gets back into shape." Sandoval's brother Michael is doing his part to persuade Giants fans that Pablo indeed is working very hard in Venezuela to prepare for his final season before he can file for free agency.

He trains? Yikes! Look at that picture above. You can barely see his head!

Back away from the empanadas.

The truth...he was so fat he couldn't fit through the plane door.

Renting a C130 cargo plane was too expensive and he was pushing the weight limit on that.

He plays better fat. Let the man eat.

Surprised he can even tight his shoe laces without his head busting.

He's going to eat his way out of the game.

Anybody remember a guy named Hector Villanueva with the Cubs a few years back?
Yeah, you probably don't remember him because he was a talented hitter who ate his way out of the majors.

I remember him. He came to the Cardinals and hit about .120 for part of a year. He was about 40 pounds overweight.

Used to be a pitcher by the name of Terry Forrster (I think). Something like that. Anyway the guy was noticed by David Letterman, who called him "a fat tub of goo". Next thing you know the guy is a guest on his late night show.

His time with the Cubbies makes me think of the David Spade line to Farley in Tommy Boy, "I can HEAR you getting fatter!"

Forster brought a huge sandwich with him and said it was a Letterman Special..."lots of tongue!!!!"

Pitchers can get away with being fat. Everyday players cant. Sandoval is too busy listening to his posse, and his stomach, to see how talented he can really be. Such a shame.
