Dodgers closing the vaults

07:34 AM ET 11.15 | At some point, the Dodgers will curb their spending -- but when? The answer increasingly appears to be now. They aren't interested in second baseman Robinson Cano, the best free agent available. They've signed 26-year-old Cuban Alexander Guerrero, figuring he'll replace this year's second baseman, Mark Ellis, a 36-year-old free agent. ... [Stan Kasten] gave no reason to expect a replay of last offseason, when the Dodgers' version of quantitative easing was to continue a spending spree on Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu to bulk up the starting rotation and help pull the club out of its recession. "I think, for us, it wouldn't surprise me if we went [through] the winter without a huge move; not that it couldn't happen," said Kasten, who had a record-breaking payroll of $230 million in 2013. For 2014, the Dodgers already have $172 million committed to 12 players.

THey're competitive now. Add a few pieces, and they're a true threat to the Cardinals.

I agree with this.
However, it is LA and they might want to go for a glitzy publicity splash by signing Jay Z's client Cano. I don't think they really need him and he doesn't cut much of a dashing public figure on his own, but they'd love to get the photogs snapping shots of Magic and Jay Z together. Might not be financially attractive even for the deep pocketed Dodgers, though.

A huge move for them this offseason would be to trade one of their extra OF's.

Not sure they would get much for any of them............

Ethier?? I wonder what they could get for him in a trade??

Ethier is a solid player, both as a hitter and defensively.

Kemp, Crawford and Ethier have all lost chunks of seasons to injuries.

Have to be an overwhelming offer to part with one. Puig is untouchable.

Makes way to much money for what he brings to the table. And he still has 4 guaranteed years left on his deal.

Ethier is a maybe.. but with Kemp's future uncertain (they have no idea how long it will take for his ankle to heal, or even if...), Crawford contract, they would have to eat it... Puig is untouchable.. that would be stupid and set the team back a few years...

I don't see them trading any of them...

How about Puig for Stanton?

Good comment and that will probably be the bottom line, "don't trade any of their good outfielders"

Nope... Ethier for Stanton?

Most good players make too much money!!! Ethier is a solid player that has a career batting average of .288, has hit 20 hrs and has had 70 rbs per year. Just what is too much money for a solid outfielder??

In baseball economics - there is NO - too much for a player..... That happened decades ago......

Either was a solid player, and would be worth the money 3 or 4 years ago. But a 32 year old OF, who looks like his best years are behind him, with that contract? I'll pass.

That might be enough to get discussions started.

No doubt - let's make this the ToTD..... can't afford to waste comments on the other threads....

Well, Cano aside, it is not exactly a great year for free agents regardless. If a Trout were out there they would be opening that vault with more bait than anyone could imagine.
